What Baby Oil Should I Use For Newborn Baby’s Head?

7 October 2009 6 Responses

A Parent asks, I am expecting my baby in another 4 weeks and busy wrapping up all the shopping. I am planning to use Olive oil for body massage. Can anyone of you suggest what I should be using for baby’s head? Is olive oil safe to use or is there any other oil that is advisable for baby’s head. Thanks for your help!

Baby oil is mineral oil which is a petroleum by-product and not good for baby (yes, Johnson and Johnson is bad). Avoid it. Olive oil works wonderfully for removing cradle cap as I just discovered, but I read that if you leave it on the head it can clog the pores. Babies are born with amazing skin that really requires very little messing with.
Here’s what Dr. Sear’s website says:
Powders and oils are unnecessary since your baby’s skin is naturally rich in body oil and they may be irritating and even harmful. Emollients (cold-pressed vegetable oil or Soothe and Heal by Lansinoh) may be used only on patchy areas of dry skin; otherwise, they are unnecessary.

Olive oil is great. Burt’s Bees also has an Apricot Kernel Oil blend that is excellent for babies and is smells delicious. Apricot kernel is one of the best oils for softening the skin. Hope this helps.

Olive oil is great for the babies head. It can help prevent cradle cap and other problems as olive oil helps to balance the flora of the skin. It is also great for eczema.
Mineral oil is the other oil commonly used but I don’t believe it has any benefits over olive oil. Just one is commonly thought of as being for cooking ;-)

I do not recommend any kind of oil around the baby personally. Oil is thick and if a small amount is ingested it could coat the baby’s lungs and suffocate them. There are lots of other products out there that are safe for a baby, maybe you should try that first. Also, if its for skin Jonson’s has a real nice calming lotion that is great for massage and even a bath soak for them too. I just do not like the thoughts of oil.
