It is in May, but I am not sure what days it falls on this year. We are in Canada
11th of may in oz! and i have no idea why it is on different days!
In Australia it is the second Sunday in May. I’m not sure about Mothers Day all around the world but we were in the USA last year and Mothers Day was on the same day as here.
Mothers day is on the same day as it is in the USA,Greece, Germany, India, Canada, Brazil..Etc on May 11th
Mother’s Day has its origins in UK where it started off as Mothering Sunday and it is on the 4th Sunday of LENT.
In Australia, mother’s day is influenced by the US, where it had is origin in the American Civil War where mother’s day was a way to unite women against the war. It was a woman called Ann Jarvis who organized Mother’s Work Days for better sanitary conditions for both the Union and Confederate. She used her work to attempt to reconcile the Union and Confederate.
Mother’s Day was officially declared in 1912, when Anna Jarvis (daughter of Ann Jarvis) founded a day for women.
For the rest of the world, many countries had already a day which celebrates women. With western influences, many countries simply renamed their women’s day as mother’s day.
Mother’s Day is celebrated on 11th May 2008 in Australia. I don’t know the perfect reason behind it but surely its a great day to show our love and affection to our mother.
In Australia Mothers Day is always the second Sunday in May.
This year, 2008, this will be 11th May and next year will be 10th May.
In Britain Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. It’s the day when children give their mother a card, flowers or a gift to show their appreciation for all her hard work.
Like so many of our best loved traditions the origins of Mothering Sunday are a little hazy.
Its earliest origins in Britain seem to be entwined with the church. Most Sundays in the year churchgoers worship at their nearest Parish or ‘Daughter’ church.
Centuries ago it was deemed important that people returned to their ‘home’ or ‘Mother’ church once a year. This pilgrimage took place in the middle of Lent.
Historians believe that this annual return to the Mother church led to the tradition of children – particularly those in domestic service who could be as young as ten – being given the day off to visit their mother and family.
Those who walked home through the countryside picked posies of flowers to present as small gifts.
Most countries have declared a special day on which to honour mothers.
Across the English Channel the French call their day Fête des Mères. It takes place in May and was inaugurated by Napoleon and made official in 1950.
In the United States, Mothers Day is also celebrated in May. It was originally organized by Julia Ward Howe, a women’s rights activist who also wrote the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
In China, Mothers Day is the only Western tradition which has official Government support. The Women’s Alliance of the People’s Republic of China uses the day to promote filial respect for parents countrywide. Carnations are the Chinese gift of choice.
Mothers Day in Ethiopia is called Antrosht. It has no fixed date because it occurs at the end of the rainy season – around the end of October. Children visit their parents bringing the necessary ingredients for a meal. Everyone sings songs in celebration of the family.
