Can I give children cooking lessons as a part time job as a teenager?

4 March 2010 4 Responses

A Parent asks, You know how the smart kids tutor younger kids for math , science etc.? My talent is cooking, do you think I could ‘tutor’ (teach) kids in cooking? Do you think people would pay me to do that? Would you pay someone to teach your kids cooking? If so, what age group would be a good idea to teach? I’m 15. If this is a dumb idea, could you suggest something similar? Like running weekend classes or so?
Thanks :)

I think it’s an awesome idea!! However, I believe your success will be on the sales pitch. You’ll have to develop a program which is relevant and safe.

I think I’d develop a “lunch-box club” — gather a small group of kids and teach how to make a sandwich, dessert, and after-school snack. As far as making money… I think I’d do something like a “kids catering chief” — if a child wishes to cook a meal (this can be a chore once a week; or as a special gift for mom or dad) you could come help them in the kitchen.

If that’s your talent I don’t see why not.Try to find children-friendly recipes that would be fun and exciting.

Unfortunately I think this idea, although good will be impossible for a teen simply because of the insurance aspects. It is unlikely anything bad would happen however if a child is injured or you do damage to someone’s kitchen then you will need to be insured. Plus, not sure where you are but in Australia you have to have a Safe Food Handling certificate to be able to work with food.
