A Parent asks, I have a 7 month old and as recommended he i on 3 solid meals a day. I dont have an apointment with my plunket nurse for a while now and she forgot to give me the notes on food for babies. Just wondering when he should start eating finger foods, bread, cheese, crackers, little bits of fruit etc
i am not the one giving the thumbs down

I don’t know all. But I know they cut cheese as soon as they’re born. 4-6 months eating solids. You will need to wait until their neck is strong enough to wear they hold their head up.
Now. Around 6 months they can start eating finger foods. Make sure every thing is in little tiny peices. Introduce 1 food every couple days (in case of allergies).
When they are old enough to sit in their highchair by themselves. Watch them carefully to be sure they are eating properly, not shoving a bunch of food in and gagging.
They will eat these ‘finger foods’ which are really snacks. You should be feeding them their meals as usual to ensure proper nourishment.
Congratulations on your blue eyed angel.
My 6.5 month old has a toast finger for b/fast every day. I am going to start other finger foods next week.
Sweetie there is no reason why you can’t even try him on some now and just see how he goes with close supervision. Generally though, I would think he’d be ready for some real finger food around 9 months. He may go through a stage where he will refuse to take anything from a fork or spoon and then you’ll know it’s time to try some foods he can feed himself. It’s great for hand and eye co-ordination too. Try him on some grated cheese first, just a small amount and see how he goes. There are also some milk arrowroot biscuits put out by “arnotts” that are great for babies as the biscuit goes really mushy in their mouths once the saliva hits it. With fruit, don’t give wedges of apple just yet as they do tend to get a bit chunky when they break off and are actually hard for babies to chew even with teeth so try grating some apple first. My now 16 month old, LOVED it and couldn’t get enough of it along with grated cheese. Pass on the bread for a little while until he’s a bit older, maybe around 10 months and then try giving him some toasted bread that he can hold and then maybe some sandwiches. He’ll guide you as to what he likes and dislikes. Don’t be afraid to try anything and if there is something you are unsure of, offer very small amount and supervise him closely, he’ll be fine though. Make sure you offer new foods a little at a time to watch for any food allergies but if there is no really food allergies in the family, then he’s got a good chance of having none himself. Good luck and have fun, he’ll make a fabulous mess and he’ll have fun getting some in his mouth all by himself which will make him really proud of himself. xx
Edit: I’ve just noticed your additional comments about thumbs down and have noticed it too, obviously someone is bored! Don’t worry about it sweetie, where here to give advise, I don’t care what people do about thumbs up or down, means nothing to me just as long as I am able to help where I can. xx
You can try now. My son is 8 months old tomorrow, and for the past couple of weeks, we’ve been introducing finger foods to him. He’s getting the hang of it now! Just make sure it’s soft or something that will dissolve pretty well. And keep a close eye on him when you’re feeding him to make sure he doesn’t choke.
Do 3 jars of baby food a day. Introduce the foods 1 at a time. Don’t do any cow’s milk dairy products (including cheese) just yet. It can hurt his little tummy. But you can start doing finger foods just as soon as your baby can start grabbing for the food and putting it in his mouth. I loved the cheetos cheese puffs they dissolve in the mouth and little pieces of banana or cut up green beans (just be careful of choking of course), but he was about 10 months when he started the finger foods.
when my son could sit up on his own and had some teeth is when i started giving him finger foods
Hopefully babies never start eating cheese. Cheese is the devil.
i wouldn’t take anyone’s advice on YA, ask your doc; put in a call and they should be able to tell you….
