What is the best way to ease your newborn into a different sleeping pattern?

A Parent asks, My newborn is a little over a week old. Maybe its too soon to do so, but how can I ease her into staying awake during the day rather than at night? Or is this something that will come naturally as she gets older?

during the day keep volume at a normal level, and brighten the room as much as possible. at night keep things dim and very quiet.

i had the same problem with my son at that age it took me 2 weeks before i got him straight. i tried to keep him from falling asleep in the afternoon/evening as much as possible and in the morning for just a little while that way it would try to straighten him out with his nights, it worked for me i would try i know the baby will be fussy as it will be tired but you will just have to try good luck!

My baby is four weeks old and I have her on a schedule already. My pediatrician actually suggested a way to get her on a schedule, otherwise I wouldn’t have put her on one. He said to feed her every two hours during the day… even waking her up to do this and let her sleep as long as she wants to during the night. Now she sleeps six to eight hours for me at night. Here is our schedule:

    8 AM FEED
    10 AM FEED
    12 PM FEED
    2 PM FEED
    4 PM FEED
    7 PM FEED
    10 PM FEED
6 AM FEED (sometimes a 4 AM feeding too)
    8 AM FEED

I added those longer stretches just before putting her to bed because it makes her eat more at ten pm and thus sleep longer :) Also, I use a pacifier to get her to sleep longer if she wakes up before four which is another thing my pediatrician suggested. He said if she is really hungry, she WILL keep crying and won’t take the pacifier for long.

When you have he awake (not in a nap) during the day make sure you have all the curtains open and the room is really bright. at night make sure it is really dark in the house. Try to keep her up more between naps and try to make it a long stretch before your ready to go to bed. At night when she wakes up do not talk to her or play with her. Just feed her milk and lay her back into bed. This establishes that it is not playtime when it is dark. Although you will want to talk and sing to her DONT. With that method I got my son whom was backwards to sleep regularly through the night within a week. Good luck

Newborns sleep so much, its a little too early to start with sleep patterns. I think at about 3 monthes my son was able to start following a loose sleep schedule.
