A Parent asks, Just wondering… My little boy will be about 1 year and 4 months when the new baby is born. They baby will sleep in a bassinet for a couple months. But, wondering if Ill be able to move Brayden to a bed and use the crib for the baby.. instead of buying another crib.

We did this very thing with our daughter at 15 months last Christmas. I was expecting our son and so we knew we would have to switch over or buy a new crib. So I introduced a toddler bed to my daughter in the store to see if she would like it. Well, she loved it and it was obvious by her reaction that it would be a smooth transition. So we bought it last Christmas for her, set it up and she woke up on Christmas morning to it. I can still see her excited face. She did exceptionally well for a couple of months and then we had the problem of her getting up out of bed a lot. We just consistently put her back and in two weeks she stayed in bed and still does now. Switching her over that early eliminated any jealousy over her baby brother sleeping in the crib. I would do it now so that your son gets use to the new bed AND so that you will hopefully bypass any jealousy of the new baby getting his crib. Good luck!
i put my daughter (16 months) in her bed when she could climb up and down things so i no she could get in and out safely, the 1st couple of nights she did get out and cry at the stair gate that’s at her bedroom door i just went in a put her back to bed without saying a word within 3 days she sleeps in it fine! when shes asleep i put her a bottle of juice in there for when she wakes up, now in the mornings she gets up has a drink and a play while im doing breakfast! easy! i also have another on the way so i wanted to make sure she was settled before he/she arrives so i don’t have to much to do at once!
hope that helps
I’d say that, for mature babies, they can go completely to a bed around 2.5 years of age. However, you can start the transition now, and just buy attachable side fences, for somewhat of a bigger “crib” bed for him. Once he gets older, the sides will be taken off, and it won’t be so abrupt.
Congrats!
I wouldn’t do it until he is ready! My daughter is 21 months and still in a crib. My friend put her child into a toddler bed and he wouldn’t go to bed. He kept getting out, and then finally around 3 in the morning he would pass out on the floor. She would pick him up and put him in the bed he would fall out and wake up screaming around 4 am. And then wouldn’t want to go to sleep! And then he would pass out again around 6 am in her bed. She ended up putting him back into his crib. And now he is 2 1/2 and wont sleep in anything other then the crib. I think with another baby it would be very hard on you not getting any sleep. But i understand you don’t want to buy two cribs when your son will be old enough in about 6 months to be in a regular bed. I guess if you have to put him in a bed which sounds like you do i would make sure the bed had high and good bed rails such as these. http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/prod…
Also i have seen bed railings like these at target. Let me see if i can find them online. http://www.target.com/Dex-Products-48-Be…
Best of luck!
buy a toddler bed and set it up and see if he’ll take a nap in it. if he doesn’t leave it in the room so he can get use to the idea and try it again a few weeks later. work for my little girl. first attempt was at 15 month and she was fine with it a few weeks later
My eldest was 18months as he started climbing in there in the day for his nap and falling asleep so I started the same for nights and my youngest was about 21months purely because the house I lived in didn’t have room for 2 beds until I moved.
