Why are some babies bigger than others?

27 January 2010 11 Responses

A Parent asks, For example my younger cousin and mother were both 10 pounders. Me and my brother were both an average six pound so many ounces. Why are some babies bigger/fatter/longer etc than others?

why do some babies blue eyes and some dark? Why do some have dark hair, some light hair and some no hair at all?

It all depends on Genetics, if on both the mother and the fathers side of the family are large, then chances are the child is going to be a rather large one.

Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes my dear.

Genes, parents are of the baby is a factor.

Lately there are many cases of huge babies, may be attributed to nutrition taken by pregnant ladies.

It’s down to genetics (if the mother or father were big babies, then there is a likelihood of the baby being larger) and nutrition in the womb.
Having said that, I had a 9 and a half pounder and I only weighed 5 pounds (my mother in law told me afterwards that all her babies were large).
Some babies have longer backs in relation to their body size than others – that’s purely a genetically inherited trait. Some adults have longer legs and shorter trunks or the other way round, and babies are the same. Newborn’s legs tend to be short because they don’t need to use them to walk from birth like many other mammals.
