Why is it bad for babies to watch tv?

11 March 2010 9 Responses

A Parent asks, Some one answered a question on here earlier and it included saying that it was bad for young babies to watch tv. Why is this?
My 3 month old daughter often watches the tv, I think shes attracted to the sound and colours, is it having a negative effect on her or is the woman who answered the question before misinformed?

I don’t think that is bad at all **In moderation**. My 11 month old daughter watches Sesame Street and loves it! She can learn from it and I really don’t think there anything wrong with it. I think they are taking about the parents that use the TV as a babysitter. There is nothing like good old human interaction to learn and grow. I think a 3 month old is attracted to TV because of the sound and colors on the screen. It won’t have a negative affect on your little one! Just make sure your baby is getting plenty of human and outside interaction as well!

Honestly I let my now 2 year old watch tv around that age too. He talks a whole lot now. I believe that it is okay so long as you don’t use it as an all day babysitter for your child.

My son has learned so much from Blues Clues and some of the other shows. He learned so many words and sentences. He knows some of his shapes and colors. He can count to 15 also. I honestly see nothing wrong with it as long as the child knows it is a privilege to watch tv not a given.

bad?? dunno. however, leaving a TV for more than an hour for a person of any age is a waste of time. it can offer a distraction for all of us in moderation and with some healthy censorship.

Its bad for them, she is not misinformed.
Part of it is that they just should be doing things that are benefitting them instead, like playing with real objects or interacting with other people.
The other issue is that the picture moves so fast I think. It is attractive but it also causes issues with attention span and makes their brains develop differently. It actually changes the way babies think/see and not in a good way, it is harder for children to learn normally if they watch a lot of TV as infants.

they say that babies who watch tv will get attention deficit syndrome.and more watching can effect eyes (possible if too much watchg or watchg standing close to tv).so,better turn off tv and don let them watch till they are 2 years old…..thats what the say.

but my kid watches tv and likes songs, colors and sounds as u said.always tell myself to permit her to watch tv only for a limited time.

It’s bad because it’s not the right kind of eye stimulation and brain stimulation that is necessary for a baby’s growth. Maximum 1/2 hour a day for tv watching for any baby under age 2, because really at that age, they need human interaction stimulation for their best growth potential in brain development, and eye tracking development.

this is what a my paft teacher told me (Paft stands for parents as first teachers- people that come to your house and talk about babies development and how you can stimulate thier learning).
The baby does not understand what is going on on tv all they see is bright lights and noise they are not able to comprehend the pictures like us. This can be bad for two reasons. 1. It may over stimulate the baby. All that sound and changing colours can just be too much for them to process causing them to become over stimulated and cranky.
    2. For some babies it can put them in a trance like state where they just zone out watching all the pretty lights. THis is bad because it is destracting them from learning. Watching TV does not help them learn about their world. It is better for the baby to spend time with hands on objects so that they can learn.
It really depends on the age of your child. I dont know at what age they start being able to comprhend the pictures on the tv screen but my daughter is 5 months and she told me to turn the Tv off when she is playing because of the obove reasons
    Hope that helped.

I don’t think it’s bad at all!! In a relatively moderate amount my girls are almost 8 months old and they watch Sprout (I’m sure you parents out there have seen it LOL) But they really seem to enjoy it! They watch 30 min after their first nap in their high chairs with there little finger food (puffs, bitter bites, you know the whole look at me mommy I can feed myself foods LOL) and after that it is play time with mommy and daddy then they usually ahve some tummy time a bottle another nap wake up play eat play bath play and wind down for the last 20 min of there day on the couch no lights with the goodnight show on Sprout they sit with there binkies and bear bears with me and my husband and after about 20 min they let us know that they are ready to go to sleep : ) But NEVER as a babysitter I hate when people prop there kids up in front of the boob tube and don’t interact with there kids I have a DVR and I watch these shows WITH my kids and I interact with them if a picture of a Bananna pops up I pause it and I explain to them that it is a Bananna…They may be little but they are still paying attention! Anyways I don’t think it’s bad unless your letting your TV babysit your KID!! lol

I don’t think it is bad, just misinformed people. In moderation it is fine. You also need to make sure that the programs your little ones are watching are age appropriate. We have subscribed to a channel that is called the “Baby First” channel. It teaches babies in a way that shows like Sesame Street cannot at such a young age. These are very short shows so that baby is not stuck on the TV all day (each show is about 10 minutes long) and my daughter has a few of them she just loves (she is 5 months old). We actually watch one of them each night before bed. It is a show called the Shushybye’s and they sing original lullaby’s to help get baby ready for bed. We watch and sing the songs together and she loves it. But tv goes off right after her show is over.
Although the TV is on all day here on Sunday’s (we are big football fans) and I am not positive, but I think she is going to be a little football fan herself. She gets so excited when the fans start to cheer = )
