How do I wean my baby while he is still sharing a bed with me?

13 March 2010 6 Responses

A Parent asks, My husband is from East Timor and I am from Australia. My 9 month old is still sharing a bed with us and sucks whenever he wants to during the night. I am now 17 weeks pregnant and need to put an end to this night feeding. My husband is uncomfortable with putting our baby in a room on his own as this is not culturally done in East Timor. He would like to move into a shared bed with our son until our second child is old enough to share the room with our first child. How do I discontinue night feeding in this situation? Can I do it in the family bed or do I need to use some form of control crying?

I read to start by wearing clothes to bed so you are not easily accesible. Also you can let him latch for a moment then start gently pulling him off without waking him until he gives up. I have a feeling it might take some practice but hang in there!! Congrats on no.2

Well, If your husband isn’t comfortable with the child sleeping in another room.. Have him get up at night and feed the baby.. I’m sure he will change his mind after a few nights of interrupted sleep.. The baby will be fine.. Move the baby out gradually.. Good luck

Filipino culture do the same way too….we comfort our baby’s until she or he’s totally grown up. u may be surprise if i tell you that until college i am sharing bed with my grandparents, so dependent that even talking to other people discomforts me i was so shy and afraid of anything…and i guess that’s not a good way of nurturing right? you wouldn’t want your son to be like that, would you?….as a mom i want my daughter to have confidence and know how to face the world ofcourse by my guidance. you know what, it really depends on how you want your son to be when he gets older…just an opinion!
but anyway i guess your son is young enough to have he’s own room how about getting “yaya” or someone who can be with your son whenever he sleeps at night? you’re pregnant so you need a lot of time to rest

I understand wanting to night wean, but your baby is still very young and may need to eat at night. I hope you will continue to give him the milk he needs as long as you are producing it.

That being said… Read this, it is a guide to GENTLE night weaning: http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/ap/sleep.asp

PLEASE do not make your baby cry himself to sleep. Your husband’s culture has is right.

I just recently night weaned my 2 year-old. I moved to the couch until my son could come to grips with not nursing all night. He didn’t cry with his dad and i got to sleep for more than 2 hours in a row! He is now in his own queen-sized bed and i go in and nurse him in the morning. He knows that “milka went to sleep” and he can nurse when the sun comes up.

Also, you may want to read up on tandem nursing:

I dont have the answer to your problem but I can only suggest ,as i have learnt after having four babies that keeping them in the same room is not good for you. How can you sleep at all , dont you worry you may roll on him? I suggest that you start weaning bubs slowly…. try putting him in a cot in your room so he is close by it will be a little tricky at first, maybe do this during the day and as he starts getting use to his cot, during the day try it at night. eventually take him out of the room altogether, it may take until your new baby is born but it will be worth the crys in the end you are going to need all the rest you can when bubs number two arrives. when the next baby is born have him/her in your room but not for too long and dont put him in bed with you put him in a bed close to you if you want but eventually move it away and then move him/her in with bubs number 1, he’ll love the company….goodluck
