A Parent asks, Attn all moms: to those of you who have fall babies. When do you plan to or did you send your fall babies to kindergarten? 4 going on 5 or 5 going on 6…Any suggestions or experiences you can share???

call your county’s board of education and tell them your baby’s b-day and ask when s/he can begin. i’m a teacher and i tell most parents, boys can almost always wait another year. girls, it’s your call. if she is social immature, clingy, or is very small, wait another year. send them to preschool instead.

Well, people say that boys should wait another year…but I was born in October and I went to school at 4 going on 5…now I’m in High School with a 3.8 GPA, so it really depends on the child. Have they been to preschool or anything like that? Ask them whether they want to go to school or not. My mom told me that they decided to send me to school because I really wanted to go. :D

I assume your cutoff is September (my sister’s was December). Look at the maturity of your child. Generally, boys mature later than girls and probably benefit from waiting. That is not a steadfast rule, of course, but I think boys have a harder time reading due to some cognitive factor. Both my sister and I were the absolute youngest in our classes and it was not a problem for us because I was an advanced reader by 3rd grade (I taught sisters to read before they went to school).

i think its september thats the cut off if they are 5 by sept 15 i think then they can go to school that year if not then they have to wait untill next year

try to get baby in preschool or head start that makes transition to kindergarten easier

Well usually fall babies go to school 5 going on 6. Depending on where you live but my sons elementary has pre-k starting at age 4 and only 4. Other than that the child will be an older child by months in his/her class, no biggie. I held my son back because the teachers said he was not ready for school so he is an older child. He goes in at the age the other children will be throughout the year because he was a summer baby and finishes the year at the same age as everyone else.

I think it depends on the child. My son started kindergarten at 4 years, and he was fine socially and developmentally. Is your child ready? Is he potty trained with no accidents? Can he button his clothes himself, knows his name, can feed himself and is starting to learn his ABC’s. Knowing how to tie his shoes is helpful, as well as knowing his phone number. Trust your instincts, you’re his mom and know him best! Hope this helps.

Maryland just changed the start age from 5 by 1 December to 5 by 1 September, so they’re being real hard about it and parents have no choice anymore. Why the teachers want a bunch of 6 yr olds (half of whom have been in daycare from birth and can already read) in K I surely don’t know.

it really depends on your child just because your 4 year old knows number and letters he still might not be ready it depends on his maturity and how he is at listening to others making friends and dealing with different situations if your child is in preschool ask his teacher her opinion in if he is ready to go good luck

my daughter was aug. 21st and i sent her to kindergarten 2 weeks after she turned 5. my nephew is aug. 24 and my sister in law chose not to send there child. she regrets it, i do not regret our choice. i felt like the kindergarten teacher should be ready for my child. my daughter is going in to 2nd grade and she gets mad sometime that she is the youngest, but academically she does really well.

Most states and counties have guidelines saying that your child has to turn 5 by a certain month in order to get in to Kinderarden. My daughter was born november 18 2002 and in our state and county she cant go into kindergarden until she’s almost 6 because she must turn 5 by august 31 or up to 45 days after. so even tho she needs to be in school I have to wait almost another year before she’s old enough.
