What time does school start and finish where you live?

28 January 2010 14 Responses

A Parent asks, I just read a question and school went from 7.45-4pm. It made me wonder what time people’s children start and finish school.
In Australia (at least primary school ) most are 9am-3.30pm. some are 8.40am-3.10pm but it is still the same amount of time at school.
please say
1. where you live
2. what time start and finish is and
3. how the day goes including recess and lunch

I am interested how much schooling each country has.
At our school it is,
9am-10.50 is work in class then 10min for snack
11am-11.30am is recess
11.30am-1.30pm is class
1.30-1.40 is lunch (in Australia kids bring their lunch to school from home, some has a school canteen open a couple of days a week but ours has no canteen (which I love))
1.40-2.30 is play time
2.30-3.30 class
3.30 home.

thanks, i love to hear from different countries how it works
I will also add that they get about 5 weeks off for summer. They finish school about the 22nd December and start again the very end of January. then at easter their is a two week break, then july (roughly) another two week break and in September two more weeks. So the year is broken up into 4 terms. They get public holidays off and 1 day per term for curriculum day (when teachers work out the curriculum)
Children start their new Grade in January/earl Feb. Unlike some places where it is about September for the beggining of school

My children aren’t school age yet, but roughly this is how it works around here for elementary age kids, (high school is slightly different):

    1. Ontario, Canada
    2. start around 8:15/8:30ish depends on school
ends around 3:00/3:30ish depends on school
    3. 8:15ish – 10ish class
15 minute recess (snack, playtime outside)
    10:15 – 11:30ish class
11:30- 12:15ish lunch (most kids bring a lunch and eat at school, a few walk home for lunch) followed by recess
    12:15 – 1:30ish class
    15 minute recess
    1:45 – 3:15ish class

Our kids start the second week in September and go until the end of June. They get 1-2 weeks off at Christmas and 1 week off for March break. They get major holidays off and occasional days off for teacher development days.

My son is in 3rd grade in Murrieta, California. He goes to school from 8:30 am until 2:45pm
They start with the flag salute and announcements which usually takes 15 minutes (unless it’s Friday, then the whole school meets at the flagpole for flag salute, joke of the week, awards, etc)
They take first break at 10:15 – 10:35
Lunch is at 12:30 – 1:15 (they have 2 lunch service times depending on grade level)
The rest of the day is classwork.

    northeastern usa

all public schools start in september, is in session for 180 days, gets out in about the third week of june.

    elementary school (ages 5-11)
starts at 9 gets out at 3:20 i believe, usually one day a week is a half day 9-12ish. kindergarten is only 9-12ish everyday. lunch/recess is about 45 min. and there is usually some free play time in the classroom depending on the grade.

    middle school (ages 12-14)
starts at 8:10 ends at 2:30
7, 49 minute classes a day, and 25 minutes for lunch. time of lunch depends on grade.

    highschool (ages 15-18)
starts at 7:35 ends at 2:05
6, 55 minute classes and 55 minutes for lunch. depending on your schedule maybe a study hall as well.

for all these schools you can buy lunch, but the food is kind of gross, so most people bring their own.

In Houston, Texas…my high school went as followed.

Last week of August, start school.

School day runs from 7:30 am until 2:35 pm, with 7 classes and a lunch packed in there. Classes were roughly 45 minutes long, lunch was 25 minutes, and 7 minutes between each class.

School ended for summer the last week or two of May.

There were a lot of half days, once every 6 weeks if I remember. One week off for Thanksgiving, about two weeks off for Christmas, and one week off for Spring Break.

    In Waco Texas…

    Class starts at 8 am
lunch varies in each grade mostly start at 11
lunch is only 35 minutes long.
    they have PE
Music Computer and Art These classes are rotated throughout the week.
Their recess is 15-25 minutes long. YEAH you heard right! This is the part I greatly disagree with. My 3rd grader gets one break and its only 15 minutes? Who decided this?
anyway school gets out at 3pm and they only get a snack thru the 3rd grade.
Most kids bring their lunch or eat in the cafateria. Parents can bring their lunch as well.
I sub at the school and in MY opinion, these little children are in the classroom too long. This explains why they come home talking and full of energy!!

    1. Perth, Western Australia.
    2. Start time is 8.45 am, finish time is 3.10 pm.
    3. This is for my daughters’ primary school.

They have recess at 10.30 am for 20 minutes and lunch at 12.30 pm for 40 minutes. I believe they do English and Reading, Spelling, etc, for the very first part of the morning, and the rest of the day is broken up into other curriculum. They attend a Catholic primary school, so spend time at Church and Liturgy every week. They also have an assembley every week. They attend sport twice per week. Other classes include library, Italian, art, music as well as the normal maths, science, english, social studies, etc. They have an excursion every term (4 terms per year). My daughters adore their school.
