How does the school system work where you are?

2 March 2010 15 Responses

A Parent asks, I am in Australia.

Here, kids can attend pre-school if the parents want to from age 4 and they attend for 3 hours at a time, 2 or 3 times a week. It costs about $600 a year.

They then start Primary school once they turn 5 and go into Prep – then it is grade 1,2,3,4,5 & 6.

Then they move onto High School which is year 7,8,9,10 and their VCE Years of year 11 and 12.

We start the school year in January and have 4 terms a year of around 10 weeks per term with a 2 week break between each school term and then have a 6 week holiday over Christmas.

I am curious to see how the school system works around the world.

How does it work where you are?

Here in the USA some places they start pre-school at 3yrs old only half a day. Some go full time at 4 yrs old. None of this costs here. They go grades K-3 to 5th in Elementary school. Then 6th through 8th in Middle school. Then 9th through 12th in High School. They have break for Thanksgiving, and two weeks for Christmas then spring break for 1 week. then they are out for our summer break. Usually two months.

I live in America (Baltimore MD)

Kids start pre kindergarten at age 4, and kindergarten at age 5. Then on from 1st grade to 12th grade. prek to 5th grade is elementary school, 6th to 8th is middle school, and 9th to 12th grade is high school.

School starts the monday before labor day and ends in mid june with about a week for winter and spring break. and they are given 5 days fitted into the schedule for inclement weather. (Any more and they go in extra days, any less and they get out earlier then expected.) The school year is 180 days long.

they are in public school, which is funded by taxes.

    United States of America:

Elementary school is grades 1-5, and the ages are usually 6-11

Middle school is grades 6-8, with the ages being 12-14

Then high school is grades 9-12, with the ages being 15-18.

School starts in August, and ends in May or June usually. Because we are in the northern hemisphere, so our summer is when you have your winter. =D

You can start preschool at 3 here it is 95.00/week. For a half day. (That is at the school itself! It isn’t free here)

Because my kids were born in Nov., and Dec. they can’t start school untill they will be 6 turning 7! Which sucks big time for them. If your 6th birthday is not before the school year starts, they make you wait a year to start.

Elementary school here is Kindergarten through 5th grade, Middle School is 6th through 8th, and High School is 9th through 12th grade.

School starts in August, ends in May. 2 weeks off at Christmas, one week off in Spring, and various one- 2 day holiday breaks, or teacher inservices.

    I am in Tennessee, USA

Where we live, there is preschool and daycare options available for parents between the ages of 1-5. When you are 5 (some start at 4, some at 6), you go into grade primary. Elementary school is Primary (age 5) to grade 6 (age 11). From there, you go to junior high, which is grade 7 (age 12) to grade 9 (age 14). Then, there’s high school. Grade 10 (age 15) to grade 12 (age 17). Of course, the ages var, depending on when the child started, if they were held back, skipped a grade etc. Our school starts in September, usually September 5th. Then, we go until the end of december, and get a week break at the end of December and a week break at the beginning of January. So, 2 weeks of Christmas break. We have a March Break for 1 week (the middle of March) and then school ends at the end of June. 2 months of summer vacation, and then it starts again in September. We live in Canada, by the way.

I’m in the United States. Generally, kids to go preschool first (optional) and then kindergarten. Then they go to elementary school from grades 1-5. Grades 6-8 are middle school and 9-12 are high school. School generally starts end of August/beginning of September and ends in early to middle of June. There is a Christmas break in which is about 2 weeks long, and kids also get a week off for spring break in April (by Easter). Some school disctricts have a mid-winter break which is sometime in February. Also, some places in the US go to school year ’round – I’m not exactly sure how that works though.

I agree with you! It’s interesting how schools changed depending on where you are!

Well I just moved to a new province recently so I’m still learning it here, but here is how it works home:

Pre-school is elective at age 4 and is basically structured play groups.

Then there is kindergarten which is half days only.

Gr.1-6 is Elementary (English or French Immersion, parents choice). Kids are usually out of school around 2:30.

Gr.7-9 is Junoir High, here French Immersion students start some classes in English. Kids are usually out around 3:00.

Then there is High School which counts as Level 1 (gr. 10), Level 2 (gr. 11) and Level 3 (gr. 12). Here French Immersion students are doing most of their classes in English. As well depending on how advanced the student is they can be doing up to 4 out of 6 classes of university classes in Level 3.

School start just after Labour Day (first weekend in September) and goes to about June 15. There are a few long weekends, a week break for Christmas and another at Easter.

Now in Quebec where I also lived briefly pre-school was mandatory, High School goes to gr. 11 and then there is CEGEP, a type of “college” that must be completed if the student is to go to University. CEGEP is a minimum of 2 years.

School goes from about August 20 to about June 25, there are a lot of long weekends, 2 weeks at Christmas for break and a 1 week break in March (usually the first week in March).

I live in the US (Illinois)

Pre-school is not manditory but you can start at 3 years old for the first year and 4 years old for the second year. My kids go to public pre-school so we only pay $70 for registration and that is it for the whole year! They get bus service to and from school and go 5 days a week. They do only go for 3 hours though.

Then Kindergarten starts at age 5 and that is manditory. Then grade school is 1st – 5th, middle school from 6th – 8th and then high school is 9th – 12th.

We start the school year in September and get out in May. For Christmas they only have 1 week off but they get that whole summer break.

Some people say that 3 is too young so they just start pre-school at 4 years of age but my son did great with it so I think it is good for my family. He loved being in school and misses it already. They are really good about going on field trips too which I really like. Like they took them to the Apple orchard, the museum, the police and fire station, and more. Parents have to be involved with the pre-school program and you have to help in the classroom once a month and go on at least one field trip. Also they have parent meeting wherre all the parents meet in a room and they go over different techniques in parenting and how to react to situations and even go over things you can do at home to help your child learn whatthey need for Kindergarten. Then you have the parent teacher meetings as well. Some people do not like all the involvment but I love it. It’s fun to see how your child reacts to a school enviornment and my son is so different than the way he is at home. He is just a little angel at school not that he is bad at home but I was suprised how good he was.

Here in Ohio, preschool is optional for ages 3 & 4, and the cost varies depending upon the program. My oldest attended a preschool co-op, where the parents helped to run things. This way cost me about $75.00 per month, for 3 days per week for about 3 hours each day. My second oldest son, attended a preschool within the city school district, which had a program for kids with special needs along with typical peers. The typical peers paid about $500.00 for the 9 month school year, and the children with special needs do not pay because the school district is responsible for paying for them. So it really depends on the program how much we pay. There are also private schools and daycares with preschool programs, as well as churches. They all cost more than the co-ops and school district programs.

Here in Ohio, we then go to kindergarten at age 5, then 1-5 is elementary aged, then 6-8 is middle school, then 9-12 is high school.

The school districts here vary in regards to which school has which grades. For example, in our district, ALL the city’s kindergarteners go to one school, just for them. Then, ALL the city’s first graders go to one school, just for them. Then, they are divided to two different schools, which house 2nd-5th grades. Then the normal middle school grades (6-8) and high school (9-12).

I live in the Midwest of the United States. Our school year begins in August or September (depends on the district) and goes until June. We have 4 9-week marking periods with no specific “break” in between, but we do have 2 weeks off for Christmas, a week in spring for Spring Break, generally a long weekend in February, and a few days for Thanksgiving. We’ve got 12 week summer breaks too.

US starts in August or Sept and goes through June.
There is about a month to three weeks vacation at christmas depending on the school and three months off during the summer. 4 is preschool and 5 is kindergarten primary or elementry starts in 6 or 7 it depends on where your birth day falls so some kids have to do kindergraden twice. There is this made up date of when they think kids are old enough to handel primary school. Even if they have the foundation of kindergarden and are on level. If you can afford private school you can get around it because they test kids to make sure they can make it. Primary is 1-6 then middle school is 7-8 then Highschool 9-12 then college

Hi there. Im from the UK (England)

Kids can attend pre-school at 3 (not compulsory but worthwhile as its free)
They begin Reception Class in Primary School in the September after their 4th Birthday (some are JUST 4, others are nearly 5 depending on when their birthday falls)

Then its yr 1,2,3 (infants) 4,5,6 (juniors)
Then they move onto Secondary or High School at 11 years old which is yr 7 and then its yr 8,9, 10 and 11.

You can then go to Sixth Form which is 16-18yrs old (yr 12-13) but not compulsory.
You can go to college at 16 or work at 16.
University usually is 18-21 or older if want, or younger if you are gifted.

School year starts in September, we have a week off around mid – end of October, 2 weeks over Christmas, a week in February, 2 weeks for Easter, 1 week at end of May and then we finish for Summer around mid July for 6 weeks.

Colleges run on the same termtimes as schools
Universities dont tend to have half terms but finish for summer in May/June and have around 3 months off for Summer!

My nearly 3yo ‘s are starting Pre-School also in a week.
Both go for 4hours a day, 3 days a week. They are so excited!
