How Do I Test If My Child Has Learned Everything Already In Kindergarten?

15 October 2009 10 Responses

A Parent asks, My child has informed me that she has already learned everything there is to learn in Kindergarten, and as such, wishes to no longer attend. Is there a test I can give her?…To show her that she didn’t already learn everything in Preschool.

Some of my friends have kids who say this. And I wonder where the kid gets the idea from that going to school is optional? How does the kid know what is going to happen in kindergarten the rest of the year?
Most likely they are picking this up from conversations they hear.
If you need only a test to give her, just come up with one yourself.. you know her abilities in each area, have questions that challenge her, and then some that she does not know the answer to.
And, if you actually discuss with your child whether or not going to school is needed, or whether she needs to go to another school, it is unusual. But, you can list out for her other things that happen in Kindergarten – like the class celebrates Halloween, Thanks Giving and they do projects around these themes – she can show her creativity and ideas there, maybe write a poem or short story.
There will be 100th day of school coming up, and most schools have kids do a project of “100 things of something”.
Then, there will be assemblies which they attend with older grade kids. As the year goes by, they will be reading poems and drawing pictures to illustrate the poem – she can get creative here.
They will be having a “student of the week” kind of thing – each student writes a letter to the student of the week – she can use the big words she knows.
Some students need help sometimes, and teachers ask kids who already know the stuff to help the other kids. Nothing can motivate a kindergartener like the teacher needs her “help”.
In short, you can tell her that they’ve been only learnign the rules and how school works so far. And, as the year goes by, she will have more and more to learn, and friends to make.

My daughter is the same way. We are just telling her that it is the start of the year and they go over things they learned in preschool before they start other things. You can ask the teacher what she needs to know in order to pass kindergarten and make one yourself or go get one of those kindergarten books at walmart, kmart, etc. and have her do them.

No. Don’t be fooled by a child. Tell her to stay in school and finish the class like everyone else.

    Can she write her name?
    Write the abc’s?
    Know all of her colors?
    Knows all of her shapes?
Have a look at a few websites that are fun yet will let her see just ‘how’ much she does know.
    Look here:http://www.wacona.com/Kindergartengames/…
For “you” to have a look at:http://www.illinoisearlylearning.org/tip…
I must say though that my daughter went to pre-school 2 years before kindergarten and she was really bored, however liked being around other kids to just play. G’luck

Ask them some easy leters from the alphabet like A,B,C,D and also see if they can cut a peice of paper straight. Even take some stuff animals and ask then the names or sounds of those animals. But here is the trick to get them to participate. For every answer they get right they a litttle candy or a hug and kiss. Or let them watch there favorite video.

not sure, I know here in canada there isn’t but I know some states have tests of some sort. If she doesn’t want to go anymore than maybe let her know that she can go and help others learn what she learned. kids love to help others out. I would be hesitant to pull her out, there is more than just abc’s and 123′s in kindergarten, its a social setting which teaches way more than anyone realizes.

if you give into this logic, you’ll be doing so yearly until she’s out of your house.
Do what I did with my daughter: tell her she has to go to school until the law says she doesn’t have to–whether or not she has learned everything or not. That way, such a decision is out of your hands.

Children in kindergarden should be able to do the following:
    Count to 100 by 1′s, 5′s, and 10′s
Recognize simple sight words such as the, they, those, them etc
Simple addition which has single digit answers
Write alphabet (upper and lower case)
Recognize all of the basic colors
Know the days of the week and months of the year
Write their first and last name
Know the difference in coin money such as a dime is not the same as a nickel
Read short books made for their age group with simple words
    Know their shapes
This is just a basic guide.
    Good luck
