How Early Can An Infant Begin Swimming Lessons?

7 October 2009 6 Responses

A Parent asks, Hi Moms
My daughter is 4 months old right now. I am hoping to put her in swimming lessons this summer when she will be 6-7 months. I was wondering if thats too young for an infant to begin swimming? Aside from the swimming itself, what about the pool being a source of infections?
Thanks!

I had my first daughter in “lessons” at 6 months and it was a waste of money. Basically these “lessons” are just to get the baby comfortable with the water. Even though the water was fairly warm, her lips were always blue by the time the lesson was over. I think you could do the same with your baby without PAYING for lessons. You take your baby in the water with you and sing songs, dance around, let her splash. You don’t really need a swim teacher showing you how to do that. Hopefully the pool you are in uses the necessary amount of chlorine to rid potential harmful bacteria. I think you daughter is safe in that respect but just don’t let her drink the water!

I enrolled my son when he was 16 months old. The really don’t call it lessons it’s just basically getting them use to the water, learning how to kick, blowing bubbles, etc. I highly recommend it as it was a good bonding time as well. My son loved it and we will be doing it again this year. As far as the infections most of the time, there is enough chlorine to kill any bacteria. Tip: bring a drink for after for both of you, as you would not believe how thirsty you will be.

Like Glenn T said I wouldn’t start the lessons yet.
♥The lessons are just so the babies get use to the water and splash around. I would wait til she was about 14months old that’s when I started my oldest daughter and she loved it. We still go to swim classes and she still loves them.
    Good luck

The “lessons” they will be giving your child will just to get them used to the water.
It will basically be wasting your money.
I was put into swimming lessons when I was 4-5.
I’d say around that age is minimal

Why would you start swimming lessons early? Michael Phelps isn’t that cool. You should wait untill she is two, then enroll her.
