How safe are infant head supports in car seats?

30 January 2010 8 Responses

A Parent asks, I am considering putting a head/neck support in my 12 month old daughter’s car seat to support her neck while sleeping but am concerned they may not be safe in an accident. Does anyone have any info in this subject?

i live in Canada and you can’t even leave the hospital with one of those in your carseat when the baby is born.

I used one. The one I had was made for an infant car seat, it laid behind the baby and the head support cradled the baby’s head. Then I used the one you placed under the baby’s head/chin when she was older to hold it up. I’m going to assume that since they are made for car seat use, they’re safe. Or, I’d sure hope so =]

Depending on what type of head supporter you are talking about, you can get her one. If they sell them in stores they will be fine for your baby. If you are worried put some blankets around her head while she is sleeping. I would say get a neck supporter though, cannot hurt.

I think they are pretty safe. I am using now a head “donut” with the belt wraps (made out of towel material). He likes it. I’ve been using those since my first child and never had issues with it.

When my daughters were born 3 1/2 years ago, my Grandmother got one of those supports for me to put in the infant carrier in addition to the one it came with, and the nurses at the hospital told me not to use it. In the manual of the car seat it says not to use any accessories by other manufactures, it says to use rolled up towels if anything.

A head support that just holds the head up should be fine. One that goes around the neck may not be. I would suggest that you contact your local place that checks car seats for this to get up to date info. Do NOT ASSUME that stuff sold in stores is safe for this purpose.

Only use one if it came with the seat. Otherwise it is not safe. Any after market products are not safety tested and should never be used. This includes the strap covers, only use them if they came with the seat.

I had a car seat saftey check and was told not to use the support I had bought for it because when car seats are tested they are not tested with the supports and could cause harm if in a wreck. I was told insted to use blankets or towels or those foam pieces for swimming cut smaller for support.
