At what age and what grade should a toddler start school?

A Parent asks, I have a son who is three, he is currently in daycare while I attend college. Lately I’ve been thinking of school, and when he will start it. I’ve asked my family and friends but no one seems to know at what age, or to what grade he should start. I’ve been told at age four or five, and i’ve also been told he should go into pre-kinder, kinder, headstart, or first grade. I have no clue where to begin, and i’d like to know ahead of time so that I may prepare him.

I’m not sure what state you’re in but in my state of Virginia, My son is also three years old and he’s going to Head Start. In September 2010, he will start preschool at the elementary school at the age of four. You can always call your local public elementary school and ask them for the information or where you can get the information you need.
Depending on your child’s educational needs, he should or should not start early at around 3 for headstart. The best way to figure this out is to contact your county Education Services department. They will be able to tell you whether he should start school now or later. Also their services are free so you won’t need to pay for any type of tuition.
I work at a preschool and as long as they have a good curriculum you could leave him there until it is time for kindergarten, after they have turned 5 would have to look up local restrictions for exact birthday deadline. Some places school is not required until 1st grade but i would recommend against waiting so long as kindergarten will most likely be the first time he is exposed to so many kids his own age in a classroom setting and also gives him a good chance to start making new friends while everyone is new waiting until the first grade he will spend the first few weeks in culture shock trying to figure out what in the world is going on.
when does he actually get to be home and have a mother?
Why are you trying to dump your parenting onto schools?
He is 3…whats wrong with being with MOM ?
whatever age you feel he is ready. Some people start at 2 and others wait until kindergarten. Public schools typically start at kindergarten, but some states do have public preschools. You may also be able to find a daycare that is also a preschool as well. It all depends on your child and how ready you think he is.
Good luck
You can start him in preschool as early as now. Kindergarden starts at 5.
