Help for infant that spits up everything?

3 March 2010 10 Responses

A Parent asks, We have had ultrasounds and xrays galore. No medical reason for his spitting up. Putting rice ceral in his bottle seems to help but not enough. Docs have seem the quantity he spitts up each time and agree that it is abnormal but have no suggestions. Is on meds to help prevent damage to his insides from all this.

Have tried keeping him upright after feedings, limiting activity after meal (as best you can with a 5 month old), feeding less at each meal, get same reaction with breast milk or formula. Tried soy but had a bad allergic reaction

2 of my 6 had this. I used the old fashion baby formula and no more spit ups. carnation milk and polyvisol. They couldn’t handle the added stuff in the formula. Talk to your ped before you do this, though I doubt they will agree with it. It’s nice to give them a heads up and they can keep an eye on him while you try.

Have you given him solids yet? That is what our doc said to do with our 4 month old. It helps keep the milk down…I guess since it is heavier in tummy? I dunno but it works no more spit up since we started. And it used to come up ALOT even long after feedings.

I know exactly what you are talking about! When my son was a baby he would just spit up everything and the docs. ran all kinds of test and couldn’t find anything wrong with him finally he grew out of it and now he is a healthy 7 year old.

Seek the opinion of another doc. Is he gaining weight? If so, that may be why no one seems overly concerned. Have they checked him for pyloric stenosis? That involves projectile vomiting….I would ask a doc about checking him for that as well as changing his formula to something other than soy. Sometimes they have to go to something even more extreme than soy! Good luck! Don’t stop seeking help for that precious little baby of yours until you are satisfied that he is being taken care of!

My son had almost projectile like spit up. The doc changed him to soy formula, it didn’t do enough. We had to put him on a formula called Nutramigen. (I believe it is by enfamil….)It was really expensive, but it was the only thing he could hold down.

    Best of luck!

There is a formula that can help it is thicker than regular formula. Ask your doctor what he thinks about this formula.

    http://www.enfamil.com/app/iwp/Product.do?dm=enf&id=/Consumer_Home/Products/Family_of_Formulas/Enfamil_AR_LIPIL

Best of luck to you and the little one!!

A friend of mine had some problems with her middle son. After alot of tests they found that he had acid reflux. Try the formula Enfamil AR it is thicker and it prevents the spitting up as much. Also there is a little flapper thing in your throat that can be messed up, It can make them asperate and make them spit up. Ask your doctor

My son used to do this when he was small, it was over feeding. I switched to more solid foods, less amounts but more feedings. Also, you can check the types of foods. ie; protiens, starches, etc. Be patient- I mean be really patient. If you are irritated or there is high stress in the house this might also bring it on as children react to everything around them. You can also limit the amount of liquid that is consumed during and following meals. Hope this helps.

My son used to vomit all the time, and I mean all the time. Vomit and cry (it’s amazing how you just get used to the smell of baby vomit)…and it was distressing.
After trying nearly everything on the market, with absolutely NO success, I put him onto an AR formula (the one I used was in a light green tin), and he didn’t look back.
Even now (6 years on), he has problems with cow’s milk, so we have to use soy yoghurt and milk, or lactose free stuff.
But just keep patient, and work through by trial and error, you will find something that will be perfect for your bub.
