How often do little ones get sick after starting daycare/preschool?
A Parent asks, My almost 4 year old is starting preschool this year. I have been a stay at home mom with her since she was born, and I also have a 13 month old daughter now too. My girls haven’t really been exposed to alot of other kids so I’m thinking that they are going to catch every little thing going around. I am thinking about going back to work and putting my 13 month old in a nice daycare here in town, since my 4 year old will be around so many little ones anyway and pass on what’s going around anyway. The daycare is really nice, opened about a year ago, my husband knows the family that runs it really well because one owner was his teacher when he was little! Did your kids get sick so often that you couldn’t maintain a job?? My biggest worry is them getting sick all the time, because I’ve heard horror stories about daycare!
Any advice appreciated. Thanks

theres lots of germs @ school
When I started my child in a dayhome it was about 6 months of illness. She had 3 colds, the flu once and 2 ear infections.
Since then she has been very healthy. She is now in a daycare and when we switched she remained healthy and didn’t get any more illnesses, so I think in the beginning she just needed to build up her immune system.
She was 12 months when starting the dayhome, 20 months when starting daycare (moved to daycare because it was closer to work, not because of health reasons).
This is something that must happen if your childrens immune system is going to work properly in the future.
Chicken Pocks, Colds, Nits, Broken bones and bruises from playing rough….al this you have to allow to happen because regardless of what you do it will happen. We live in a society where we think nothing bad should happen to our kids but colds and rashes and other aches and pains are a fact of childhood. Just try to keep an eye out for the serious stuff. Too many bruises may suggest bullying and The rash that doesn’t change colour when pressed with a finger is an instant doctors visit. Not to mention the continuous scratching when the nits move in!!!
Kids get sick and injured regardless of what you do to prevent it. You’re employers should be aware that you are in a position where you may have to dash off for an hour or two for a trip to the doctor or the hospital. Part of being a parent I think. God help us!
To be honest, I was a stay at home mom for the first year of my son’s life. I got a job and took him to my husbands’ aunt’s house because she watchs children from her home. Within 2 weeks, he caught such a bad fever I had to take him to the ER and found out he had pnemonia. It was very scary and the doctor said he probably caught it so easily because he had never really been sick before because he was rarely exposed to other kids. It can happen, but I’ve now been working 4 months and that was the only time he was sick. Good luck
A week or two, there’s lots of germs. Especially at day cares. Remember to tell your kids to wash there hands before eating.
My son was sick frequently when I first put him in daycare. But you do have to allow time for their immune systems to grow strong and learn to prevent illness before it starts. The less a child has been exposed to germs, the more often they’ll get sick when they are. It’s also important to ask the daycare their cleaning policies. I had my son in a daycare I thought was fine….but he got sick A LOT. They said they disinfected every night. One day I asked to see their cleaning supplies, and the girls couldn’t even tell me where they were…..so yea. I immediately took him to a daycare his father went to when he was little too, and they are a-m-a-z-i-n-g. He hasn’t been sick once in the last 3 months he’s been there. It’s an immune thing AND a disinfectant thing (plus this daycare has a no-coughing policy, if the child has a hacking cough, they won’t let them stay….sucks to take off work, but I like that they are watching out for the kids).
My nephew is in daycare and he is sick ALL THE TIME! He is constantly catching stuff from the other kids there. In fact, due to the bad behavior he has also learned at daycare, my husband says that all that boys knows how to share is the flu.
My little girl goes to nursery 1 day per week. She was never ill until she started nursery!! She started at 7 months old – she’s now 19 months old. She gets ill probably every couple of months with something!! So year your kids are going to catch a lot to begin with but thats how they build up their immune system. They have to have had it to become immune to it!! So yea your kids may pick up quite a bit for the first year but all being well it won’t be too much and they’ll built their immune system up quickly. Its generally colds and the occasional tummy bug. Nursery is so good for them though. My girl loves going.
Not every child gets sick more when they start daycare/preschool. Every child is different. There is a chance yes, but after 6 months to a year, it usually blows over. The main thing to check for at the daycare is that they are cleaning the classroom and washing hands of EVERYONE in the room, even adults, on average 10 to 15 times per day. According the Infant-Toddler Rating Scale and the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale, hands should be washed upon arrival, after toileting or handling bodily fluids, when coming in from outside, at mealtimes, and any other times hands appear dirty. That is the main way to keep your child healthy when entering daycare/preschool for the first time. Do not let the horror stories scare you. It’s not as bad as people think. Children do get sick more as they get older because they are exposed to more germs than when they are non-mobile infants. Good personal hygiene is the key.
It really depends. It will definitely take a toll on their immune system for a while. With this swine flu thing, I can tell you that daycare workers everywhere are nervous from themselves–let alone the children.
Average sickness is different for everyone. Some kids are prone to it, some aren’t so much. I’ve seen kids who have a cold for 2-3 months. I’ve seen others who get sick once and are fine. It really just depends.
my son started 4year old kinda this year and i have noticed he has been getting sick alot more than he did whei when i was a stay at home mum, now i am working fulltime i feel as though i dont get enough quality time with him i do wonder if prehaps our children are getting stressed themselves or run down like us parents do. its cruel sometimes that we have to work so much when we should be able to stay home with our much loved children, oh and yes i have also noticed the bad behavior that my child has picked up from kinder!!!! i would love to be a fly on the wall, some ppl are so lucky to be 100% satisfied with there childs kinda or daycare, i honistly would say i am yet to find something possitive that has come from kindagarden apart from the artwork, wish i could say otherwise.
i know this has come a bit late but i went back when my baby was just 3 months old and had to quit within a year because from the day i started work he started to get ill all the time and was not gaining weight. I had no troubles having my older child looked after by the childminder so can’t blame her. he does seem to have problems even a few months after i’ve quit and keeps getting ill every week and it’s one thing after another always the worst symptoms for everything i am struggling at home but i don’t know how i managed to work either. i hope it worked out for you
