When did you start brushing a baby/toddler/childs teeth?

23 April 2010 10 Responses

A Parent asks, I was told children should not brush their teeth until they are about 2 yrs old. Is this true/false or debatable fro each parent? What age did your child start brushing their teeth? Or you start brushing for them?

I would brush as soon as the first tooth comes in, or at least wipe it down. They have those little finger toothbrushes that make it easier with yummy tasting fluoride free toothpaste. It is great for their teeth and gums but it also gets them used to the idea and practice of brushing so they don’t go ballistic when they are older.

Kids need to start brushing their teeth as soon as the first tooth starts to break through. Actually it’s best to start cleaning their gums from birth. I started wiping my twins mouths out with a baby damp baby washcloth over my finger from the day they were born and then as soon as their first tooth started to pop through which for them was around 4 months I switched to a baby tooth brush and still just used warm water. Then around a year I started using the training tooth paste on their tooth brush which they are still using to this day because they haven’t mastered the art of actually spitting the toothpaste out. A training tooth paste or gel doesn’t have any flouride in it which is a must until they are good at spitting out the toothpaste rather than swallowing.

I started wiping my boys gums as soon as they were able to drink something. It’s always good to wipe their gums even if they don’t have teeth. Even my boys dr. had told me this as well.

I agree with Emma. Wiping their gums is very healthy. I’ve had my nephew for 3 years now and since he was 3-4 months old I wiped his gums. Some stores actually carry a “thumb brush” that you wipe your baby’s gums with. It works great! =]

You’re supposed to start brushing right when their first tooth comes in.. not with a toothbrush.. if you go to the baby section by the pacifiers and bottles and all that there are little brushes that you put on your finger with fluoride free toothpaste and you swipe around their mouth, gums, and teeth with that until they are older and can use a toothbrush. You’re supposed to do it every day.. I’m not sure i do it *every* day but I try to!

You should brush them once they start on baby food with just a wet washcloth to rinse their gums…when they get an actual tooth then start brushing with baby toothbrush and cleanser. I did this with my son….definitely do not wait until they are 2…you should start brushing right when that first tooth comes. Take care of the baby teeth and gums because it will affect the adult teeth/gums.

You should start cleaning your baby’s teeth as soon as that first pearly white sprouts (for most babies that’s around 4 months). “At first, just use a piece of gauze moistened with water to wipe plaque from your baby’s teeth and gums,”You don’t need to use toothpaste, but try to clean your baby’s teeth twice a day.Once your baby has several teeth, you might try using a small toothbrush with just two or three rows of very soft bristles. Ask your pediatrician whether to use toothpaste, and what type of toothpaste. If you live in an area where the water is fluoridated, he might advise against using toothpaste that contains fluoride. If your water isn’t fluoridated, he might prescribe fluoride drops or tablets and recommend fluoridated toothpaste. Either way you should know that fluoride can be toxic to children if ingested in large quantities.

I started brushing my kids teeth with the little finger brush once they got some, I just used water until they were a year old, then I started using the baby toothpaste, now my kids are 3 and almost 2 and they use a toothbrush and kids toothpaste to brush there teeth. I just don’t want them to have any problems with the teeth or gums and I thought getting them on the right path with good oral hygiene now will help them later.

I started brushing my baby’s teeth on day 2… I used a finger brush or gum brush, or a washrag. When she hit about 15 months old, I would brush her teeth, and then hand the toothbrush to her and let her brush. Since she still bites the toothbrush and doesn’t get everywhere, I am not in any rush to let her take over yet. I have to see that she won’t just bite the toothbrush (we are still working on that.) Still, she’s starting to.

If it takes until she’s 2, then she will take over at that time. If it takes until she’s 5… then it will take until that time. I’m more concerned about the job getting done than her age.

Which idiot told you that one? Any reputable pediatric dentist would disagree to wait until your child is 2 to brush their teeth. I started brushing my daughter teeth with a finger brush and water when she was 3 months old (when her first tooth came out) and with a toddler brush at and fluoride free toothpaste at 12 months since she had a mouth full of teeth by that time.
