What Is A Good Age To Put Your Child In Preschool?

13 October 2009 21 Responses

A Parent asks, My daughter is three years old and my family keeps asking when am I going to put her in preschool. I was thinking four is a good age. When did you put your kids in preschool? Did you put them in preschool or straight to kindergarten at five? Some advice parents. I am teaching my daughter letters, colors, and numbers here at home since I am a stay at home mom but is it more benificial to get her into school?

I truely believe that three is young and if you can keep her home until four then I think the child is ready by then to do whats going to be required without as much stress to themselves.
You say your a stay at home mom and your teaching her things so your on the perfect tract.
I think that in todays hussle bussle everyone forgets that a three year old child is just that. They are,nt four soon to be five ,They were just two and now they,re just three. Sure they are learning quickly but emotionaly they are just three still.
Do whats right for you and your daughter and don,t let anyone make you feel as if you need to do something you or she is not ready to do. Enjoy each other one more year and continue to bond and strengthen her own sence of who she is -and then do as you want to do-send her to school at age four.

my little one is in preschool at the age of 4. It’s more beneficial to teach kids at home rather then letting the school do it. You teaching he rat home will help her when she/he goes to school rather that not knowing anything and being behind other scholars that already know their name, age, sex, colors, and how to write. There are about 4 kids in my little ones class including him that the teacher says are outstanding because it makes her job easier. She wishes more parents would teach there kids instead of them not knowing nothing when they arrive

This is your decision, not your family’s. No, it is not more beneficial to put her in school yet. Age four is better if you are sure it’s what you want. Why not wait until kindergarten (and did you know that in California, legally she does not have to go to kindergarten?). If she seems happy at home with you let her stay there. Once she begins schools, the illnesses will begin, ear infections, colds, etc. I put my son in preschool at age 3 because I worked full time at the time, and he seemed to like it, but if I had a choice back then, I would not have done that. Also, she will most likely have to be potty trained too. If you have a choice, keep her at home and keep teaching her the way you are. I used to get educational videotapes from the library also for my son when he was that age to enhance his learning also. As far as socializing goes, she can do that with kids at the playgrounds, her relatives, etc. You can take her anywhere. Just being out is a learning experience. Remember, she has at least 12 years of school ahead of her not counting going to college. Follow your own heart. Good luck.

I have a 3 year old boy and a 4 year old boy, my oldest is in secound year of Headstart aka Pre-school and my youngest just started his first year…………. they love it, I think it is a great program, and helps them get ready to go into kindergarden at age 5……….. But, if your not ready don’t let your Mom push you into putting her in, I know when my oldest went for his first year, he came home learning how to share, knew his ABC”s would try more differant things, knew more than I did………… good luck

3 is fine for going to school. Though teaching at home is good the school gives them better atmosphere for learnig, getting along with other kids, and listeneing to somebody else other than their parents and also make them more disciplined.

Well really it is a personal preference. I have a 4 yr old and I put him in preschool last year… not so much b/c he had to go or it was the right hting to do but my husband and I felt it was time to get him around other kids…..it had been just me and my son at home for 3 yrs. So we put him in a church based pre school he went 2 times a week for 3 hrs. each time….HE LOVED IT I noticed such a change in his speech and his behavior, he is attending the same school this year but 5 times aweek for 3 hrs. each time. I do have one caution….. when the kids are so young they really can’t deal with an all day type of learning environment….. they will 13 yrs. of all day learning but it won’t hurt to ge thteir feet wet for a couple of hours and they’ll have fun while learning. Good Luck and I hope I helped a little bit! :)

Some preschools require that the child is potty trained, but not all. Three is the most ideal age to enroll a child in preschool is age 3.

4 years old would be the best time to put her in pre-k, my daughter is 31/2 and I plan to put her in pre-K when she turns 4, I do the same thing, I taught her her letters,#’s, and colors at home as well.

I was put in at three. I think the more schooling they get, the better their education will be, obviously. Teach her how to write her name. Try to go over the edge and do some math. Pre-school is good because your kid can meet people, and not be anti social. I don’t know. that’s the best answer I can give.

My daughter is three and starts nursery school on Monday. But I agree, typically they have to be potty trained. Alot of nursery schools won’t take them until they are potty trained.
I think it depends on the child. I feel my daughter will benefit greatly from someone elses influence and needs more structure in her day, structure that I just can’t give her. But that’s just me and my feelings on her personality.
My honest opinion is that I think it’s important they have some school experience before kindergarten so I think if you hold off until she is four that is perfectly ok.

I think that kids tire of school. And the earlier they start like in daycare or preschool they are missing out on things at home. I never put my kids in daycare. I just don’t think they could defend themselves if they get picked on. Also somekids are not as mature as others. So while some kids are ready others maynot be. I guess you have to ask yourself if you think your child is ready or not. Another thing is don’t EVER let family push their advice or pressure you on decisons regarding your children. You are their main provider not family. I hope I helped a little.

Does your school system have a Pre-kindergarten program? If so you may want to enroll your child in a daycare before hand so that a school setting with other children will not be a HUGE shock to your child. Also the earlier they are exposed to other children the more of a tolerance kids build up to common colds and viruses. I recommend putting kids in daycare even if it just three days a week.

I think what you’ve done for your child is a good start. I think you should put your child in at 4 years of age. Keeping teaching her at home every day. My mom placed my brother in a daycare that was like a preschool but it wasn’t really school. My brother learned how to write his first and last name before Pre-K because of daycare. Now my brother is in 1st grade and he can do things i never did when i was in school. The earlier you can have your child learn and adapting to life’s lesson the more sucessful she will be in her own.
