Q&A: How much weight should my pregnant cat gain?

22 August 2010 6 Responses

Question by Megan N: I have an outside cat and she came to me today and her belly was REALLY big! So I brought her inside. I looked her over and her nipples are also starting to pertrude. My best guess is that she is pregnant. I was just wondering how much should a pregnant cat gain per week? I know how much she weighed when I had her at the vet before she was pregant. So I was wondering if I weighed her now and she has a big difference in weight that I could confirm this pregnany.

Not much more than 5-7 pounds. That would be like a human gaining 20-30 pounds Also it depends on the age of the cat…by the way why did you let her get pregnant???

Chances are she is pregnant. I dont know how much cats should gain a week but probably no more than 5 lbs. total. The only definite way to confirm the pregnancy is to take her to the vet. But if her stomach is larger and her nipples are pink & pertruding, i’m positive she is pregnant.

Make sure that you get her fixed after these babies are born. You won’t be able to get her spayed until a month after the babies are weaned(at 8 weeks). During that time, she will need to be kept indoors so that she doesn’t become pregnant again. Many cats will go into heat only a month after delivery.

You are so irresponsible. Do you know how many orphaned kittens there are??? It is because of people like you. You should have had your kitten spayed. Do you know what happens to all the orphaned newborn kittens out there that get taken to a shelter? If they are not adopted within 2 hours of arriving at the shelter, they KILL them. You are adding to this problem by not being a responsible pet owner.

I was wondering the same thing – as our cat is pregnant. (If you are an idiot who just wants to gripe about people breeding animals – then keep you nose in your own business. NOT having wanted kittens in no way reduces the number of unwanted kittens. It does reduce the gene pool dramatically and eventually leads to genetic defects and health problems. )

    Hey

For us people who have cats that adopted us, or don’t have thousands of dollars to get it done right away. Mine’s pregnant but i’ve had her for months and with male cats around and she didn’t get pregnant until now which is almost 9 months since i’ve had her. Please explain to me how i was to know she was spayed as you can’t always see the scar for a spayed female cat. I don’t have 200 to 300 dollars to wasted on something she doesn’t need. I don’t plan on turning my kittens into the shelter at all. And i highly doubt the people who asked about this will do the same.

I read somewhere that the cat should gain only about 40 to 50 percent of pre pregnancy body weight… so for example my cat who weighed 6 lbs before should only gain about 2.5 to 3 lbs, but I would contact a vet if you are concerned.
