A Parent asks, So I’m planning on breastfeeding this baby when I have her regardless, but I was wondering…does breastfeeding help you lose weight faster?

Breastfeeding burns calories, it also shrinks the uterus and there is some evidence if you don’t breastfeed your uterus will always remain slightly enlarged.

However as usual diet and exercise have more to do with weightloss than anything else.

it does as long as you maintain a healthy diet and stay active. I lost all my pregnancy weight really fast. I am still nursing my 9 month old and am still loosing additional weight that I need to loose anyway.

Yes, it totall does! You burn an average of 500 to 600 calories a day from breastfeeding. Your body takes what you eat and drink and turns it into breastmilk. It’s basically burning the food and calories and you’re not even exercising. It’s the easiest weight loss ever. If you want to lose weight after the baby is born, I would recommend breastfeeding. However, you will be hungrier than normal because you’re burning the food so fast so you have to be careful not to eat a lot more because then you’d be cancelling out the 600 calories.

It did with my first but with my second I got the Mirena IUD and it made my weight loss stop as soon as I got it in – wish I would have gotten on the Mini-pill again. You use an extra 500 calories a day when you breastfeed if you do it full time. Doesn’t hurt to try and is great for both you and the baby – heck of a lot easier than listening to a child scream and cry while you prepare a bottle if you ask me! (That and you don’t have to carry bottles around!) Best of luck!

Absolutely. Breastfeeding helps your uterus contract, that’s why pumping before birth can cause you to go into labor. This website has a lot of info on how breastfeeding helps you lose weight. http://smartmomma.com/new_momma/lose_weight_fast.htm
