When expressing breastmilk, if you don’t get enough for a feeding do you just dump it?

9 December 2009 16 Responses

A Parent asks, Sometimes when I express breastmilk I only get a little bit, not enough for a feeding, So I just dump it.
If I get enough for a feeding I will freeze it.
Is this what you do?
I do let my daughter feed from my breast. I just pump so I can have extra milk in the freezer, in case of an emergency or for a special circumstance.

Sorry I don’t have the right answer to your question. But this is what I do. I let my son feed on my breasts. Somehow there is better flow when you let the child suck, instead of using a pump.

When I was pumping, and didn’t get enough for a full feeding, I’d just start him off with that one. Give him the little bit, and then a full one after it. I felt bad wasting it…. but I also didn’t have much milk to work with. If you have lots of milk and there’s only a little sometimes, I wouldn’t worry about it dumping it. As long as baby has enough when s/he needs it!

No, I froze every last drop. Breastmilk was too precious to me to dump.

You can put a bag in your fridge and add breastmilk to it over a couple of days before freezing the whole lot.

Not really clear why you are expressing milk, if not to save for a later feed.

NEVER throw out pumped milk. It’s not called ‘liquid gold’ for nothing. If you only get an ounce, freeze that ounce. You can add more milk to it later, or freeze several small bags to mix into a bottle when you need to feed it. Or save it to mix with cereal when baby starts eating solids. He’ll only take a tiny amount at first, so those little bitty bags will be just right.

No!!!!!! Breastmilk is liquid gold and dumping it is wasting it!!

Keep whatever you pumped in the fridge for a couple days. You can always add to it before it’s time to freeze it. Also, you can add cold milk to your already frozen milk. Just make sure it’s been in the fridge for a day before you add it – you can’t add freshly pumped milk to frozen b/c it’s warm.

You can freeze it and mix two small frozen batches together

I read that you can add new milk to previously pumped milk for 24hrs. So, collect all the little bits into one milk bag in the fridge, and then use it or freeze it. I hate dumping milk, it takes so much effort to get it and makes me feel wasteful to dump it. Just add it all up and then feed the baby.

I leave it in the fridge for 1 day and as I pump 4 times per day I usually get enough to freeze.

Don’t dump it! Keep it in the fridge and add it to the next pumping session – you are throwing away “liquid gold”…….

Breast milk is good for (1) week in the fridge. So pump everything you can in 6 days and then freeze it. It’s good in the freezer for 3 months. That way you aren’t wasting anything.

No. I keep it all. You can combine milk from different sessions to equal up to a whole serving.

I agree to save it! Try to pump more than once a day and add the milk together. Freeze the milk at the end of the day. That is what I do. After more practice, you will probably notice that you pump more. Good luck.

I would save it and add more to it next time you pump. Then I would freeze it. I never throw away good milk!

I am guilty of dumping breast milk when I do not get enough for a feeding.

The idea of mixing milk i pumped earlier to milk i just pumped does not sit well with me (although i realize it is completely safe). Personal issue i guess.
