What is the best breast pump? And where do I get it?

11 March 2010 8 Responses

A Parent asks, I am the proud mom of a beautiful baby boy. He is only a week old and I have sooooooooooo much milk that my breasts are like missiles. I purchased a First Years pump from Wal-mart (50.00) and it is okay but I think I could use something better. Please let me know which one you found or just know works best and whereI I can pick one up. Also I am pretty interested in the double pump as I lose alot of milk when I start pumping one breast. I try to catch as much as I can but that is pretty hard to do when I am massaging the other breast! lol

Thanks in advance!

I LOVED my Medela Pump in Style. It was a double electric pump. They run between $250 and $500, depending on what gadgets you want. Personally, I used the Advance, and it was great. (I had a breast reduction 6 years ago and really struggled with my supply.) You can get them at Babies R Us. You can also go to the Le Leche League’s website for some advice in case you are dealing with oversupply issues. Hope this helps!

I have a Medela pump in style advanced, it is an electric double pump. You can buy them from their website or from the hospital. I am not sure where else to get them. It was 275 dollars but well worth it! Congrats on your new baby!

I have an Ameda and I love it. It was $200.00 for the Ameda with the carry-all bag. If you are not working, you can get the regular pump and it’s 150.00. This pump is excellent and a closed system- no risk of milk contamination and you pump right into the bottles.

    Have a look here:

Easy to use, easy to set up, break down, and clean. It’s also much less then the Medela brand.

    Good luck!

I use Medela Advanced and absolutely love it. I was on a very tight budget and bought it on Craigs List. I purchased tubes and all other accesoires from Medela web site, as they do not recommend using used ones, even if they have been sterilized. I have been pumping for 8 months now, it works great. I take it to work, it looks like a regular bag. it’s wonderful!!!

I had originally started out with the Medela Mini Electric which was recommended for occasional pumping and it did work very well for a single pump. I did however have to invest in a better model as I have to pump every feed so I went with the Medela Pump In Style Advanced model. It was retail (CDN$) almost 400 dollars which seems steep, so I did a bit of browsing and found a brand new one on Ebay for half the cost. By the way, it works great and cut my pumping time in half.

Doing a bit of research and browsing online can help you find a better deal. Just be sure not to buy used or refurbished. It can be dangerous for baby especially if milk gets contaminated.

I love my Medela. The double pump allows for quicker expressing sessions, it did not hurt my nipples, and it conveniently came in a slick black backpack that I could inconspicuously carry anywhere. Go electric all the way! And if you can afford it, get the Medela which is said to be the best one in the market. It is sold at Buy Buy Baby, Babies R Us. Even Amazon! If you have that much milk, you might want to buy their freezer storage bags that have these cool contraptions that you attached to the extractor and pump directly into the bag that goes in the fridge. You can build up a nice stock and not worry when you have to go back to work, for instance, or have to be out. Your baby will still get mommy’s best.

I was fortunate and was given three different breast pumps and had the chance to try them all so I have some experience to share about differences between them.

    1) Medela Harmony single manual pump – works well, for a manual. I got a decent amount of milk from it but as my daughter was in the NICU for a week I was pumping full time and the couple times I was at home instead of in the hospital I used it and nearly got carpal tunnel syndrome. I liked it though because I had to use it in the car a couple times (I was not driving) and it’s small enough to be inconspicuous and doesn’t require power. Good for a back-up, or for travel.

    2) Evenflo Comfort Select single electric breast pump – worked OK. Didn’t get as much milk as my Medela pumps. VERY LOUD!!! When pumping in front of the TV, I would have to turn the caption on so I could at least read what was going on. The valve was also not that great. Milk would collect at the top and I would have to un-suction my breast to allow the milk to flow into the collection container. That meant I had to pay really close attention to what was going on otherwise it would overflow into the electric part.

    3) Medela Pump-In-Style double electric – EXCELLENT! My first choice of any pump I’ve used. The two-stage expression that I believe is exclusive to Medela really works well. This would get the most milk of any pump I used, was quiet enough to use in the same room as my sleeping baby, easy to clean, and comes in a discrete bag that looks like a normal bag you’d take to work so it doesn’t announce to your coworkers THIS IS MY BREAST PUMP!!! You can also use it as a single pump if you want to, so it’s versatile. The only drawback is it costs about $300 new, but if you plan to breastfeed for the full year or more, I would say it’s worth it. You can also probably rent one of these from your hospital – I know I could from mine.

    Good luck!
