A parent asks, Question by Pregnant with Twins-Due Aug 2010: Can anyone give me advice on which breast pumps you have found to be really good when expressing milk?
Hi everyone,
I’m expecting twins (8 weeks to go now) and I’ve bought some Avent bottles and a Breast Pump which is what most of the children at my childcare centre use.
I’m planning on breast feeding but will need to use a breast pump at times for expressing so my husband can feed or just to express excess milk etc.
Can anyone recommend other good pumps they have used.
I live in Central Queensland.

Medela (electric not hand) pump is the best and used by most hospitals world wide.Though it also is the most expensive. But considering that you are having twins,I would go for this pump as it is said to be the most effective.I use the Lansinoh (electric) pump.Works great for me! And is in the middle for price range.I also have used it 2-3 times a day for the last year. It seems to be holding up well. You can always rent a hospital grade one from them when you deliver as well. Also remember that pumping is not really an effective way to express milk.It will never be accurate. No machine can empty your milk completely than your baby.It is also said that introducing the bottle before 4-6 weeks can cause nipple confusion. If you do use bottles,I recommend using a nipple with the slowest flow possible.Drinking from the bottle is a different sucking technique and is easier to express the milk out than feeding directly from the breast. And your baby will know the difference and could reject the breast. So get the Medela one and if your fiances are tight than go for the Lansinoh one.I can not say anything about the others,I haven’t tried any other.Good for you for nursing,it has many benefits!Congrats and Good Luck with the Bambinos!
I use the Medela pump in style and it has worked great for me. It costs around $275 but it comes with a ton of accessories. It is also a double pump which is quicker and supposed to keep your milk supply up better than a single. As far as the nipple confusion thing goes, we fed my daughter with both a bottle and the breast from the time she was born and havent had a problem. I think if a baby is hungry and not just offered a bottle the second they refuse the nipple then it wont become an issue because it wont be allowed to.
I was told by a lactation consultant that the only pump that can maintain a supply for a long period of time is a hospital grade one… I rented one for six months for my daughter since she couldn’t latch! It was like, $80 a month but I considered it worth it, and formula would cost just as much if not more! I used a Medela Symphony from the hospital she was born at and it was fantastic….
