problems expressing breast milk.?

4 July 2010 7 Responses

Question by Cassie A: I am the mother of a 1 week old baby. She is unable to feed directly from my breast so i have been pumping each feed and feeding it to her with a bottle. The health nurses have told me to express between feeds, to get my milk supply higher and store feeds in the fridge. I have been doing this for 3 days but my milk cannot keep up. It is taking me nearly two hours to get not even 2 feeds. Should I start using formula? Ho can i get my milk supply higher?

I have the same problem. My 5 day old has jaundice so I started using formula to keep her hydrated. If staying hydrated is a problem and your not expressing enough breast milk I suggest that you use formula. To get your milk supply higher just pump every 3 hours and eventually you’ll get enough milk. My milk supply has already started getting higher.

Well the babys sucking would help the milk supply to increase. But sense there is none of that, then thats why little milk supply is present. Baby formula is the 2nd best thing you can do right now but make sure its the right kind of formula.

try taking fenugreek herbal supplement [ but it'll make you and baby smell like maple syrup]

or try taking mother’s milk tea [this can get expensive, as it is recommended to drink 3-5 cups a day] [however I believe you can look up a recipe for lactation teas online]

just pump and pump every 2 hours and about every 3-4 hours at night… unless you baby eats more often t night

you can also mix formula and breastmilk.. it doesn’t have to be one or the other… give breastmilk for as long as possible but you can mix occassionally

Try mothers milk tea, it really helped me. And also fenugreek. But make sure to drink a ton of water. The fenugreek may make your milk smell a little. There both natural and can get them at GNC. The pediatrician told me not to pump/feed too often because the milk won’t be as rich. Try pumping for an extra 20 minutes, even if you arent getting anything, it stimulates the breast. The breast will adjust to what the baby needs. Hope that helps

Why can’t your baby nurse from the breast? Find a lactation consultant to help with latch problems. The money is well worth it…formula feeding is really expensive. Nursing your baby is a much more efficient way to produce milk than expressing or pumping. If you know anyone else who is breastfeeding, ask to “borrow” their baby and nurse that baby to get your milk going. You could also have your husband/partner nurse.
Traditional Medicinals has an herbal tea called Mothers Milk that other moms have told me really helps.
