How long after breastfeeding do your breasts stop producing milk and return to normal?

Question by j_macrow: I breastfed my son until he was 18 mths old. We have just celebrated his 2nd birthday and my breasts still produce a yellow/ milky discharge, not a large amount. They also still feel a little lumpy. Is this nomal or should I be worried.

varies but such a discharge with some swelling or fullness may persist for a long time.

It is 7 years since I nursed and I still get a little discharge and feel a little lumpy. I have heard that you never stop producing milk and that your body reabsorbs it. That fits what my experience has been.
