Any ideas to help increase amount of breast milk.?

12 July 2010 11 Responses

Question by Mand: My baby is 4 months old and I need to express milk, i’m having difficulty. He has an early morning feed on one side at 6.00ish, but I don’t seem to get more than 2 ounces from the other side. I want the expressed milk to add to his baby rice which I am trying to introduce. Any ideas.

What do you think? Answer below!

just keep feeding on demand, and pumping.
you will be able to increase it that, way, also make sure you are drinking alot of water, it will help keep your milk supply up

You can increase your milk supply by……

    — breastfeeding/pumping often
    — drinking lots of fluids
    — keeping your caloric intake up by an extra 300 calories per day than what you should be taking in for your body size
    — eating oatmeal (not instant)
    — taking fenegeek (a natural herb supplement — warning this can make you smell like maple syrup)

pump more, feed more…pump in between feedings…also try oatmeal. I drink Mother’s Milk Tea as well and all things combined I am able to express 4-5 ounces 4 pumping sessions a day.

Getting two ounces from one breast is terrific. If he’s getting 4 ounces per feed (and he’s probably getting a bit more from directly nursing), and nursing 6-8 times a day, that’s 24-30 ounces of milk — which is really all he needs.

Second, 4 months is pretty early yet for solids. If you wish, you can pump milk now and freeze it for when you do start solids (6 months is the usual time), but there is really no need to start solids this early. (And many good reasons to NOT start it.)

Finally, if you do opt to start now, you certainly aren’t going to need 2 ounces of milk a day to mix with the cereal. If you’re starting at 4 months he probably won’t want more than a couple of teaspoons of cereal at a time — he won’t be eating 2 ounces for several months. And if he DOES want more … you can give other solid foods. If he can eat rice cereal he can eat peas or peaches, there is no reason you have to give cereal at all. There are NO nutrients in rice cereal that a healthy 4 month old baby needs. Solids are purely for fun.
(When I started solids at 5 1/2 months I just expressed a little milk directly into the bowl and added cereal to that.)

Nursing is supply and demand. I would suggest that you pump in between to build your milk supply.

2 ounces should be enough to make up his baby rice. At first you’ll probably only need 1-2 tea spoons of baby rice and about a ounce of breast milk. Do you express at the same time as you feed him, this helps me.

Way to go on successful breast feeding! 2 oz is a perfectly respectable amount to get from a single side, remember that your baby is much more efficient at getting that milk out than any pump. La Leche League International suggests trying fenugreek tea to help increase your milk production, however I would always check with a certified lactation consultant and your doctor before taking any herbal supplements. As for feeding your little man rice cereal, I would suggest waiting til 6 months as this is the recommendation of LLLI and most pediatricians. Until that age they don’t need anything but your milk! If you want to start the cereal to just introduce him to the concept of feeding then a teaspoon or two is plenty enough for his age each day and the 2 oz of milk you get in one morning will go a long way (as long as it is stored properly).
Best of luck to you and your little man!

The nurses told me a warm cloth on your breasts will help stimulate milk, as will a hot/warm shower

    Lots of ideas!!!

-Express first thing in the morning is best as this is when your supply is at its highest – although it sounds as though you are already trying this.
-Relax – a watched pot never boils!
-Fenugreek capsules – I found they work a treat but take a day or two to kick in.
-Lots of skin to skin contatc and extra feeds from your baby will help increase your supply.
-Extra suckling even when you feel like you have run out can also stimulate more milk production.
-Read the link below on Kellymom – it has lots of additional information on other options and more detail on fenugreek which I highly recommend.

I was never able to develope much milk, and believe me I tried! I did everything everyone told me. Ate oatmeal. I pumped every TWO hours. And took Fenegreek tablets. Nothing helped, and have now stopped all together. Good Luck! But don’t be discouraged !!
