13 July 2010 11 Responses

Question by Smile:): Im currently breastfeeding but I will be returning to work soon. Is there any other milk I could give him? Iv had a look at the soya milk but on the packaging it says not to be given to children under 2.

My son wont drink from a bottle he only bites the teat and thats why I wont use a breast pump.

What do you think? Answer below!

Goats milk works like a charm.
If not, and he is highly allergic to lactose, soya.

lactose intolerance causes children but if the child is actually allergic it goes for all kinds of milk, pls consult a child specialist who will prescribe the right thing

My son too was lactose intolerant and we gave him “Vanilla Silk”!!! He LOVED it and was on it for a year or so! His pediatrician is the one who recommended it!! I am pretty sure most soy milks are safe for babies! I would ask your babies doctor… But there are many choices out there!! Good Luck!

Is he allergic to soy formula too? My son was allergic to milk and milk formula so we used Similac Isomil and then the toddler Isomil. Luckily this is something children can grow out of, so keep checking on his allergies with his doctor. He grew out of it right around 1.

My older son was allergic to milk, soy, peanuts and eggs. He is no longer allergic to milk or soy. But while he was allergic, we used Allimentum (also from similac) formula. It is very expensive though at 25$ a can. We later used Peptamen Junior. (also very expensive at $7-8 a ready to feed can) He grew out of the milk and soy allergies around age 3.

If i were you, i would go and see your doctor and see what they would recommend to replace formula and cows milk.

They will more than likely say soya milk but you could always ask their opinion on giving your baby goats milk, as that works great as well. (my cousins baby was the same; allergic to both formula and cows milk and wouldn’t take soya milk so the doctors advised her to give Lewis goats milk)

With all my recent research about lactose intolerance (my little girl is allergic to the lactose I’m drinking which is being passed on through my breastmilk), I have looked into formula that is lactose free and there is plenty of it.

As he is only 1 year old you could use Lactose free toddler milk or even formula for 6months -12 months.

My daughter was allergic to milk from birth until nine years old. She threw up her first bottle all the way across the room right onto the nurses uniform. They then put her on soy formula (Prosobee). She did well with that, but from being a big nine pound nine ounce baby to being between the tenth and twenty fifth percentile at every doctor visit even these days. When she was one her pediatrician recommended that I keep her on formula for another year. This worked until she was eighteen months and then she did not want it anymore. She just would not drink it. I would suggest that you pump your milk for him, or put him on a soy formula for a year until he is two. My daughter just outgrew her milk allergy at the age of nine years. We found out in January when two rounds of RAST testing and also two skin prick tests showed that she now had no allergies. We tried cow’s milk and she was fine with it. Hope your son will outgrow it also.

PS: ABOUT ALL THE REPONSES ABOVE REGARDING LACTOSE INTOLLERANCE: Lactose intollerance and milk allergy are two different things that require different approaches. I had one daughter whom was lactose intollerant and one who was allergic. If a child is lactose intollerant and shows symptoms of belly aches, vomitting, and diarrhea then yes lactose free milk will work for that child. If a child is really allergic and shows signs of rashes, asthma like symptoms, hives, cold symptoms, watery/itchy eyes, runny nose, coughing, red cheeks, ALONG with the diarrhea, vomitting, spitting up… then he is allergic and giving any milk products could be dangerous causing him to go into anaphylictic shock in which his throat will swell up to the point that he can not breathe. I needed to keep an epipen where ever my daughter went because she had a few serious reactions when she accidently ate pudding and other milk products that sent her to the ER. They told me that a few more bites or a few more minutes would not have been good. She could have stopped breathing. You need to be careful to listen to misinformed people. Please do not give your child milk if he is allergic… it is very serious…

Our doctor recommended soy millk, I never heard that it wasn’t for babies under two ??? Hmmm…
You could also try rice milk, but it doesn’t taste very good. And goats milk is a more natural option, however, because goats milk shares many of the same proteins as cows milk, he could still be allergic to it.

My son is also allergic to milk. He is1 now I’m still nursing him do to his allergy. Plus I also had to stop drinking or eating milk products. They where causing him to have bronchitis and asthma symptoms. Once I stopped he got better.
If your baby is under 1 please don’t give soy milk. It does not have the proper nutrition needed for them. Try a different formula that’s not milk based. Or pump and give it to him a. Zippy cup. try a differently nipple closer shaped to the breast. It takes time for then to get use to a bottle since it is so different. Go to an allergist if need more info.
