How long does it take for breast milk to dry up?

14 July 2010 3 Responses

Question by Empire of the Sun: My twins are 14 months old. One of them has stopped breastfeeding and the other is just has breastfeed once a day for comfort. My periods returned last December. I don’t have a lot of milk and if i express I am lucky to get 50 mls or 2 ounces. If my other daughter decides to stop how long will the milk take to dry up. Thanks

2 weeks to a month, youll have to completely stop breasfeeding or expressing/pumping milk, youre breast may swell and hurt,(dont be tempted to feed to relieve pain) this will be temp and after that has gone away, no more milk

It could be 2-3 months or it could be years after nursing this long, it’s really quite individual.

when i stopped breast feeding i gradually stopped.. i would nurse maybe 1-2 times a day, they stopped gorging at that point.. i stopped about 6-8 weeks ago, and i still have a little bit of milk come out if i try.. nothing measurable.. but within a few days you wont leak as bad.
