Question by Ashleigh Webb: my pump seems to take a really long time to pump out not much milk, i know my baby is getting enough milk because he is stcking on the weight, and one suck from him seems to give him a whole mouthful, just the pump seems to take forever, does anyone else have this problem? what can i do to get the milk flowing better for the pump?

This is a VERY common problem. Pumps are just nowhere near as efficient as your baby. It may get easier with time. Thinking about your baby or looking at a picture of your baby while you pump may help you letdown faster. Here is a link from La Leche League with some other suggestions:

I had the same problem, it was the pump I was using. I had the evenflo handheld pump, which completely SUCKED! I would pump for like 40 minutes and get maybe 2 ounces. My daughter wouldnt latch on so pumping was my only option in my head. I went and bought the medela dual pump backpack style and the first time using it i saw dramatic results. 20 minutes for 3 ounces. I had thought I just wasnt producing alot of milk, but that wasnt the case, it was my suckie pump. They r ridiculously expensive (about $350) but completely worth it if u want yer child to have breastmilk. To get yer milk flowing better offer the boob whenever possible. If he isnt latching keep trying, my daughter didnt latch on till a month and a half. The older yer child gets the more yer milk will come in. U only produce as much as the baby needs so if u r just trying to stalk up on milk for outings and errands then pump in between nursing so yer body will think baby needs more milk. Hope this helps!
