How can I stop producing milk?

20 July 2010 7 Responses

Question by robyn k: My little girl refused breastfeeding at 2 months but for the last 2 months I expressed so I could still give her milk. Supply has gone down and I am stopping expressing, what can I do to stop producing milk? (I am returning to work so attempting to restart breastfeeding is not an option and please don’t say “google it” as I am asking for other people’s experiences)

I had a hard time with that. I nursed for 9 months and still could express a bit after 16 years. Then when my daughter went into labor I was squirting all over again. (She’s 21 now and my grandson is almost 2)

Just leave them be. Don’t let anyone touch your breasts and if that doesn’t happen the doc can give you ‘dry up’ pills.

Find a man, and ask him if he can suck all the milk out of you…

You have to completely stop expressing. Within two weeks, your breasts will become rock hard. After 2-3 more weeks you will stop leaking and your breasts will be back to normal. They used to have a medicine to help women stop producing milk, but it has been deemed unsafe in recent years.

Massage while they are hurting will not help. (Massage stimulates milk production) Try not to even touch them. Just stock up on breast pads for a few weeks.

I would recommend the dry up pills from the doctor. As said above you need to stop expressing and don’t touch but they can get quite painful and its hard to do it that way.

When I weaned my little girl I just cut down the number of feeds, you could do the same with your expressing – if you are doing it 4 times a day, cut down to 3 times for one week, then two times etc. I think this is much less painful, as your body will naturally start to produce less. I didn’t have to use the pills and dried up quite quickly.
    Good luck!!
