Is it safe to alternate between breastfeeding and formula feeds, as long as I pump to keep up supply?

Question by Mummy’s Booby Fed Bubby: To breastfeed 95% of the time, and having formula as an option for my partner to give to our son if I am away temporarily, or sick, an example; 1 formula feed per day and breastfeed for all others?

Yes it’s perfectly ok, in fact that is what I did with my daughter when she was still breastfeeding. Your supply may reduce a little but if you pump you should be just fine. It takes a bit of the pressure off you and lets your partner get involved. Or you can pump and give the baby expressed breast milk instead of formula. Completely up to you.

Yes, providing you pump instead during the missed feed, otherwise your supply might take a hit.

Its ok. My baby is 10 mo and still breastfeeding. I work part time and am away for about 6 hours, 5 days a week. She gets formula while Im at work and is breastfed for all feedings when I’m home. I dont pump at work because I dont get a lunch break so I have no time to and my supply is still ok. I just feed her before I leave and feed her within an hour after I get back.

What do you mean by “safe”?

Some breastfeeding does not negate all the risks of formula, and exclusive breastfeeding offers health benefits that mixed breast and formula feeding does not.

it’s better than nothing but it’s not optimal because formula does NOT digest the same way as breast milk. your baby will likely experience digestive discomfort on up to outright intolerance.

why not pump and freeze a 3-day supply instead? you won’t have to worry about keeping formula around the house then.

It is ok but not as good as exclusively breastfeeding. http://massbreastfeeding.org/formula/bottle.html
Why not pump and freeze a supply of breast milk? You’ll be amazed how quickly your freezer will fill up!

If you’re pumping to keep up supply, why wouldn’t you feed what you’ve pumped instead of the formula?
