breast milk storage?

6 September 2010 4 Responses

Question by Nicky: If I was to express milk for my baby and kept it in the fridge for say 3 days could I add more to it until day 5 (recommended storage time in fridge) and then freeze it?
I know I can’t add room or body temp. milk to frozen milk but wondered if it’s ok to place in the fridge, add to it and after a few days freeze it.

I was told not to mix different lots of expressed milk when freezing it. It’s OK when you’re giving it to baby but not for freezing purposes.

Ok this is how i did it and was told by a wic nurse to do it. After expressing cool it first then add it to either other bottles or a new bottle/bag and if freezing it do the same. I would however highly recommend bag storage as it takes up much less room and thaws quickly for use.

found this… so I would say you can do both

You can combine milk from different pump sessions, but cool each batch first and store according to the age of the oldest milk. It is best to freeze your milk in small quantities (2 to 4 ounces depending on the age of your baby) within two days of expressing. Leave room in the container for expansion when freezing, and date each container. As your milk cools, the cream may form a thin layer on the surface. Swirl to redistribute the cream when you warm the milk.

    and this…

You can add more milk to already-frozen milk, but cool the added milk in the refrigerator first. There should be less added milk than already-frozen milk.

Always leave about an inch of space at the top of the container to allow for expansion. Just like water for ice cubes, human milk expands when you freeze it. Hard containers will pop open as the milk expands. Bags will break. Squeeze out the air at the top of the bag and fasten it an inch above the milk.
