My baby won’t drink formula – only breast milk…?

Question by nikkiann: My 4 month old will only drink expressed breast milk. He refuses to drink formula and just gags on it and spits it out. I know that breast milk is the best for babies but I want to be able to feed him formula sometimes if we are out and I have been unable to express. I have only tried Novalac Stage 1. Do different brands of formula have different tastes?

He’s not silly! Breast milk is sweet….have u smelt the formula as its going down the sink…YUK! Is it u trying to give him the formula or someone else? If its u or u r close its going to be pretty hard to convince this baby its for the best!! lol! If ur only out for a few hours why not feed him just before u go and as soon as u get back.
This is normal, beast milk is better than formula.
Yes different formulas taste different talk to your doctor before changing your babys milk. Maybe you should try half and half…part breast milk and part formula. Good luck
Smart baby! I’d work a bit harder at building a stash for your freezer
You should be happy some people say breast milk makes ur baby smarter plus think about aleast you don’t have to buy baby formula the prices are going up……LoL…..if you want to go out just use a pump and leave the milk their……Hope I helped

formula and breast milk taste totally different to babies . breast milk is sweet .
nestle good start supreme is the closest one I could find. My baby digested this on the best .
Each baby has different dietary needs .
The link below is a really good informational website that will answer alot of questions for you .
good luck !
Just express before you go anywhere. take some with you and keep some refridgerated for when you get back. If you have been feeding your baby since birth on breast milk then i doubt you will be able to give him formula now that he is four months, because he has got used to the taste/smell etc of your breastmilk. most formula’s will have different tastes though so maybe he just doesn’t like this one.
Smart baby! Seriously, all formulas smell and taste like dead worms (what I imagine dead worms would taste like!), have you tasted what you’re trying to get your baby to drink? Why not just nurse your baby? It’s so much more convenient (obviously) than expressing and bottling, and it can be done anywhere anytime. But that’s not your issue, so… from working with babies and many different formulas, I’ve noticed that nestle good start has the least offensive of the odours, maybe it’s a little better tasting too. But you also have to be aware that a baby whose stomach is used to breastmilk may not tolerate formula well, and you could end up with a very cranky baby on your hands (lots of fun, especially when you’re out). Another thought, you know breast milk (unlike formula)stays good for hours at room temperature. You could express before going out and feed it to your baby within a few hours, no mixing required!
When my seven-month-old daughter was four months old, we would go out and just work around whether or not she was hungry, slept, etc. It got frustrating a few times, but I knew it wouldn’t last forever.
The thought of giving my daughter formula sickens me. It’s not good enough, regardless of the brand, as it’s still formula and not milk. The few times I’ve been able to pump, she wouldn’t really take the bottle. She is definitely her mother’s daughter as she likes it all-natural and as fresh as possible and straight from the tap. Even as late as a few weeks ago she wouldn’t take a bottle of milk. My sister tried giving it to her and my daughter wouldn’t take it. We just used the milk the next day in her cereal.
Now that she is on solids, we can go out a bit easier. We take turns feeding her while we eat and I will breastfeed her when I can. (The one restaurant we frequent that isn’t within walking distance from our townhouse is by a Babies “R” Us. Well eat first then go to Babies “R” Us where my husband will buy anythign we need while I sit in the mother’s room and nurse her.)
Also, my sister babysits for us while we take a class together. (My husband is in grad school and I’m auditing a class with him.) She has also babysat once when we went to a dinner together. My sister will feed my daughter her dinner and if my daughter is awake when we come home, I’ll nurse her before bed.
My daughter also won’t take a pacifier, either. She will take our fingers, especially my pinkies, but no pacifier. The week she turned six months she started to take her index finger and middle finger of her left hand. Unless she’s really upset, she’ll take her fingers over mine, which is fine. Just one small step to independence.
In the early days when going out was hit and miss, sometimes “going out” was just takeout from our favorite restaurant a couple of blocks down. It was fine with me, most of the time, as it was winter and too cold for me to want to go out, let alone take our baby.
It will get better quicker than you realize.
now i don’t want the formula brigade to attack me, but have you ever tasted that stuff? I have smelled it and it makes me gag. Breast milk is sweet and formula is chalky. Which one would you prefer? And as far as needing something when you are out, you have everything you need. If you are worried people will be offended then don’t be, because as long as breastfeeding moms are ashamed to feed in public, society will continue to have there close minded distorted views on breastfeeding. I am not saying let it all hang out, but it is very easy to discreetly nurse. I hope you give your baby a say in this decision to give him formula, cause he seems like a smart kid : )
He’s a normal breastfed baby, I wouldn’t want to drink formula either.
Try soy formula. My baby wouldn’t drink formula from bottle either only breast milk. It turn out he’s allergic to cows milk and has slight sit allergy. He us still breast fed@ 13mths. I can’t find anything to switch to. By other to kids loved neastle good start.
