Pumping 4-7 ounces of milk is actually way more milk then normal. Have you tried placing the baby to the breast and allowing the baby to nurse – this is the best way to stimulate and produce breast milk. Have you tried fenugreek?
put babe to the breast more often, drink lotsa water, and call your lactation consultant.
I am not sure what you mean by stopped producing milk. It is common to be able to pump a bit more early on when your supply hasn’t really established itself & then for that to drop back a bit as your supply evens out – particularly if you aren’t pumping every day. WHat you pump is not a direct reflection of what you can make while nursing. Babies are MUCH more efficient at getting milk from the breast than a pump is. My BFF has exclusively BF two children now & cannot pump an ounce…not even drips. Pumps just don’t work for her, yet she can nurse just fine. My littlest is 4 months old & at this age I could pump quite well with my first, but I also worked & pumped more often. Now without any “practice” – I am lucky to get an ounce, yet my baby is a total porker. LOL
For increasing supply I would look into making lactation cookies & taking More Milk Plus (a supplement) Both helped me immensely. There is also Mother’s Milk Tea which you can probably find a little easier – although I hate the taste of it – I can handle it IF I put in TWO Celestial Seasons Apple Spice tea bags WITH one Mother’s Milk tea bag (so three tea bags in one cup). Others don’t seem to mind it as much, they just sweeten with honey. I hated it though.
Breast milk is supply & demand, so the only other thing you can do is nurse, nurse, nurse. Any time my baby wants to nurse I let him & for as long as I can take it (or until he stops). Allowing for comfort nursing, even when baby is not actively nursing is EXCELLENT for your supply. I had to have a chuckle to myself recently as I have a friend who told me repeatedly how her milk dried up & she was unable to nurse. Then recently I was letting my baby comfort nurse & she says to me that I shouldn’t’ do that, he will get into a bad habit & that he should be able to go 3-4 hrs by now. Now mind you I nursed my first until he self weaned at three & this is my second & she is giving me advice on it…but anyway – I said to her that if her milk dried up did she ever think it MIGHT have been not allowing comfort nursing & keeping baby in such a strict schedule? I actually think she heard me too. I think so many times people mean well with their tips, because they want us to feel “permission” to not be “strapped down” by nursing, but nursing is a bit of a sacrifice, It requires time & patience & sometimes unfortunately a little bit of pain, but overall it does get much easier after the first three months. So if you want to get back to it – then just do it & stick with it & soon you should see it ease up in difficulty. It is doable, especially this early on, but it might be a little struggle at firs ti fyou in fact have stopped nursing & started giving formula You should strongly consider contacting you rlocal Le Leche League for help if that is the case.
GL & congrats on the new baby!!!!
Try and actually breast feed your baby, they are much better at draining the breast then a pump, also releases hormones, which will make more milk.
Drink plenty of water
Try a herbal tablet that increaes milk supply
Eat at least 3 solid meals a day and 2 healthy snacks
Don’t over exercise, just a little each day
And if your stressed, DE-STRESS
If that all fails, then unfortunatley there isnt a great deal you can do, good luck
