What is the difference between giving birth at a PUBLIC hospital compare to a PRIVATE hospital to give birth?

9 January 2010 11 Responses

A Parent asks, My husband wants to go public all the way. He says its not worth paying so much money since you get the same outcome either way.

I might try and get into the RPA.
Thank You Ladies for your time to answer my question =) and your advice

public is a lot better in my opinion.. in private hospitls often they run to a stricter schedule.. and for that reason have a much higher rate of cesarians… alarmingly high….
you might get your own room.. but is it really worth the hundreds you will pay?? plus the public hospitals, like private, deliver babies all day.. so they are just as experienced..

I am answering if you’re in Australia.

I went private for my first baby. It was a nice hospital and a good experience, but we came out with a $800 bill (13 years ago – imagine what it would be now!), after our private health cover.

I recently had a miscarriage in a public hopsital (it was a small hospital) and I had exactly the same medical and “nice” facilities and even better treatment. The midwives were very attentive and kind and responded a lot quicker than the private hospital nurses. I came out with a $5 bill for the pharmacy.

I don’t know if this would differ in a large public hospital, but I have no complaints. Public was better than private in my situation.

    Hope this helps.

You pretty much only get your own room and your choice of doctor (so long as that doctor is willing to come in even if off duty). I live in Qld and in the town I live in they don’t even deliver babies at the private hospital anymore, and if your a private patient and the private rooms are full it’s tough titties, and you have to share with the other public patients

In my opinion it’s not worth the money, your husband is right.

I Agree With Your Husband. You Really Get The Same Thing In The End!

I Read an Article Recently In A Pregnancy Magazines About Private Vs Public.

In Private Hospitals There Are 30% More C-Sections Preformed.
Im Not Sure Why… Maybe Because they Run Such A Tight Scedule They Get Bored Of Waiting For It To Come Naturally?

The Average Stay In A Public Hospital After Having Your Baby (if everything is going well) Is About 3 Days, Where In a Private, Its About 5 Days. Which Can Be Good Or Bad Depending On How Much Help You think You Need And Want.

In The End All The Nurses Have Been To School The Same, Learn The Same Things And Are There To Do The Same Thing, Deliver Your Baby Safely. So Why Pay For What You Can Get For Free?
But Then Agian Its Your Choice And What You Feel Comfortable With !! So Your Husband Is Giving Birth To Your Son Or Daughter. You Are!!

    Good Luck :)

Hmm, that depends, I think.. From where I come from, it’s all about the long queues at the public hospitals/clinics and getting a different doctor each time.. But of course the price would be a huge difference as compared to private ones..

My hubby and I opted for a private one here.. Same doc every visit is very important to us.. As well as the waiting time.. XD

You get exactly the same treatment, BUT you get to have a private room. My mum works as a midwife for the NHS and she said she is seeing women (postnatal who have missed out on appointments and information after going private) it seems the NHS is better. Also, if you are in the public ward you will have other new/expectant mothers to talk to and you could become friends for life, that happened to my mum when she had me, she became friends with a woman who had a baby the day before i was born, we are all still in touch now 26 years on. Definitely something to think about.

I had both my kids in public hospital and I had my own room, and the Doctor that delivered my kids came in the next day and the day after that one of the other doctors from the same practice came. I would go public you get the same treat private sounds better but cost more.

I am in the same dilemma trying to decide between public and private hospitals.

I am 12 weeks pregnant and just rang the local public hospital to make an appt. They said I had to come back at 16-20 weeks. Can anyone shed light on tests or other things that I should be doing at 12 weeks? I’m just a bit concerned as it’s my first pregnancy – so i’m completely in the dark.
I am wondering whether i should be going private so that I can see an obsteotrician earlier.

I am not a high risk pregnancy or anything – just completely new to it all!

    Thanks for your help!
