Do most women get nauseous during labor?

7 March 2010 15 Responses

A Parent asks, In my childbirth class, the teacher said that most women feel nauseous while in labor. She said that sour candy may help soothe this feeling. Has anyone experienced this before? I have a bad phobia of throwing up, I havent thrown up in about 9yrs! I carry phenergen with me just in case I feel sick so that I won’t throw up. So I would like some advice on how to soothe the nauseous feeling if I’m unable to take phenergen while in labor. I have heard that “preggie pops” may work, has anyone tried these?

I was also worried that I would feel nauseous but I never did. Chamomile Tea with a bit of ginger in it is very good at preventing and helping with nausea… plus it’s very soothing. Just make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated as tea dehydrates you.

I’ve never heard of a woman getting nauseated during labor. It certainly didn’t happen to me. I don’t know, it may be a reaction to meds, stress, the sight of an IV…who knows? Or, it may just be the teacher trying to prepare you for absolutely anything.

I’ve also never heard of “preggie pops,” but if you’re worried about getting nauseated, you can carry some candied ginger root or powdered ginger root capsules (you can get powdered ginger root at a natural foods store or an herbal shop).

I didn’t feel nauseous during labor but after the labor. I had epidural and not sure if that’s the reason. The class I attended didn’t teach how to soothe it but avoid having meal before the labor. Fortunately I told the nurse early and she got the bag for me to puke in before I mess everywhere.

I havn’t been in labour before but i will be within the next few weeks and i personaly think that when it comes down to it, you will be in pain and excited about the baby coming that you will not even care about throwing up! but yes it is very common to throw up in labour because of the shock your body is going through. You will be fine, i wouldn’t stress!! Good luck

It’s normal to feel nauseous during labor. I had a cool rag on the back of my neck during labor, which helped to soothe the nausea.

    Good Luck!

They can give you some stuff for nausea-yes it is very common in labor. Especially, if you are given narcotic pain relievers. Good luck.

I sure threw up alot when I was in labor, but nausea, no, not really. I was nauseaus for about 2 seconds, I’d throw up, then feel fine. I only threw up maybe 5 times during my 14 hour labor. It wasn’t like a contant nausea leading to vomitting, though.

And when you’re in labor, chances are they won’t let you eat or drink anything but ice chips, so I think it would probably just be better to not resist, throw up, and feel a thousand times better afterwards., because the nausea probably won’t last very long.

If you haven’t thrown up in that long, I wouldn’t worry about getting sick in labor. These people tend to generalize. I didn’t feel the least bit sick with either of my labors. I was too busy concentrating on getting those big boys out of there anyway!

I have 2 kids. I never experienced that during labor. I don’t even think you have time to think about that!! My baby is 6 months old. When I was in labor I do recall the nurse telling me that after she put some kind of relaxer in the IV I could have a feeling of throwing up or getting dizzy but I didn’t!

Feeling nauseous is a sign of the final stage of labour and baby is not far away. I don’t know what will help or make it go away but throwing up made me feel better, lol.

I dont really have experience with this, Im only pregnant with my first one. But I hear that people get sick during labor because 1) The pain is so intense it makes them sick 2) Medication they may be taking for pain or labor could make them nausous. But if you do start to feel sick, they should be able to give you something to help. Good luck, and dont worry!~

I have heard that the only time that you get nauseous during labor is when you ate right before going into labor.

I got morning sickness the entire pregnancy and tried everything imaginable. Preggie pops did not make me feel any better, neither did the seabands that go around your wrists. lol

I have only personally known one woman to be nauseous during labor and she told me that she consumed incredibly greasy pizza beforehand. lol

i have 3 kids 2 were born vaginally and the other c-section,the c-section one i got nauseous and that was because of one of the pain medications they gave me but right after that they gave me medicine to stop it. Nauseous only lasted a couple on minutes.

I’ve never heard of anyone getting nausious from labor. I guess it’s possible from the pain. When I was in labor my blood pressure when up so they put me on an IV of some type of medication that did make me nausious but once I got used to it in my system I didn’t feel it anymore.
