How Long Do You Have To Use A Pad After Giving Birth?

11 October 2009 10 Responses

A Parent asks, So, I -hate- pads. I know I’ll have to use them for my period directly after giving birth. My question is, for how many weeks do you have to use a pad after giving birth? Is it just the first period after or?

It’s not really a period, it’s called lochia. After you deliver, you’ll bleed anywhere from 4-6 weeks straight. During this entire time, you must use a pad to decrease your chances of getting a very bad, very serious infection. You are not to put ANYTHING (including a penis, vibrator, etc) in your vagina. After your 6 week check up with your doctor, he will tell you (unless there’s an issue) that it’s ok to use tampons, have sex, douche (if necessary), etc.

Right after birth you are draining out all kinds of yuck. I had to wear a pad for 8 weeks after I gave birth. It varies greatly, though. Some women it is only 2 weeks. But you have to wear a pad until you are done draining. For your very first period after all the yuck is finished I’d say you can wear a tampon. I did.

I hate pads too, but you won’t even care… You’ll be too tired and too busy with the baby to even think about it. How long you bleed just depends on the person. I bled for three weeks and spotted for another. Once that “period” is over, you’re free to use tampons.

do not insert anything inside until the bleeding and discharge stops. as long as you have that you need to wear a pad. it’s for your own protection

I believe you can resume wearing them after your 6 week checkup.

I stop wearing after 3 or 4 weeks when it stop bleeding. I would still use a liner though just in case.
