It doesn’t always work. Castor oil works as a laxative so she can expect to be in the bathroom for awhile.

This is an old wives tale, so there is no guarantee that it will work. Also, I wouldn’t take anymore since I heard it can really upset your stomach instead of sending you into labor. Has Your SIL tried having sex with the hubby. Not a guarantee again but more fun. I guess the reason behind sex is that there is something in the sperm that can bring on labor and I have also read having an orgasm can bring it on too. Good luck to her and it is very sweet that you are trying to help her.

It shouldnt take long but I wouldnt take castor oil you dont know what harm it has done to the baby. If she felt uncomfortable and pass her due date why she didnt tell her doctor to induce her?

All that’s going to do is give her diarrhea and awful cramps. It won’t put her into labor. That baby will come when it’s ready or the doctor will do a C-section when they think it is time.

i was 2 weeks overdue, frustrated, cring every five seconds, and ready! i tried everything! so, i heard about the castol oil and i took 4 oz straight! ewww! about 4 hours later i was on the toliet all night long! i felt nauseated, disgusted, horrible, and well i didnt leave the toliet. Castol oil is kinda like a laxative, i dont recommened it and most doctors dont. I did not go into labor at all from it.. Three days later after my doctor was going to induce me, i went into labor…. So maybe its one of those things, each person is different…. so goodluck!

That is a myth. It doesn’t work!
NOTHING will make her go into labor except the baby or medical intervention.

i’ve heard that’s a very bad idea. i know everyone says it induces labor but i’m pretty sure it doesn’t. my friend’s doctor laughed at her when she asked about it and told her don’t try it. but i have heard walking a lot and having sex helps. orgasms stimulate contractions.

It has not been proven to induce labor. Tell your SIL to be patient and that baby will be born when he/she needs to be born, and anything she does to disturb that could endanger both mother and child.

There is no real answer to this question because every woman is different and castor oil doesn’t always work. Castor oil is a laxative and works as a laxative within a couple of hours. The cramping that it causes can promote labor to start so if the castor oil is going to work it will be within the first few hours. Good luck!

god i get sick of answering these questions I’m a midwife and taking Castor oil is a myth it do sent work for the people who think it does there body was just ready anyway and from all that explosive poop they will be doing can sometimes cause cramping.
look i will tell you taking Castor oil can cause the baby to go into distress and have a bowel movement in utero well just a couple of weeks ago i delivered a still born baby to a women who had done the same thing sure you here of stories were people say it works but it dose not always turn out as planned why risk your babies health.
besides that if she dose go into labor she has to risk **** tin all over the doctor and or midwife while delivering how embarrassing I’ve seen it happen good luck to her.

Castor oil is an old wives tale
The fact of the matter is, is that the last few weeks of pregnancy is very scare, very stressful & extremally uncomfortable.
We are all just waiting for that moment when we think -ouch- this is it -hooray-
Go buy your sister in law a heap of dvds, a jumbo size bean bag,
& whatever food she is craving. Try & keep her mind off of being uncomfortable & that dreaded labour. Because before she knows it she will have a beauitiful baby and let me tell you THAT is when the stress really starts.
    Best of Luck

it worked for me , i took it in the afternoon and in the next morning my water broke, sure it could of been coincidental but I believe it was the castor oil. (the castor oil gave me some bowel movements as well).
maybe it depends on the person or the quantity you take

Ah, castor oil. Some women do take castor oil to help get begin labor, but if it was that easy to induce labor every woman would be doing it, wouldn’t she? Castor oil acts as a laxative. If your body is ready to go into labor, or is already in early labor, some people believe that castor oil can tip you over the edge and get the labor going stronger, although none of this is proved by science. This is what it comes down to: Some people say Mexican food will put you into labor, some people say castor oil, and some people say going for a car ride on a bumpy road (among a million other myths). Although we know a lot about the science of childbirth, no one knows why labor begins. And no one knows how to start labor in a woman whose body is not ready to begin labor.
Because castor oil induces intestinal cramps, you could be uncomfortable and could have diarrhea, but in healthy women there should be no real harmful effects. So my advice is this: If you want to take castor oil to induce labor, ask your doctor or midwife about this. If you have the okay from your health care provider, then decide whether to try it. Or, you could wait until your body is ready to go into labor on its own timetable. That would be my choice.

I think it usually takes about 24 hours if she walks allot and then just keeps busy. I have known a few people who took castor oil and it worked but it is not guaranteed.

Your body will go into labor when it desides the time is right. Castor oil is only a myth and can do nothing more than cause an upset stomach to your poor sister. Plus, it’s pretty nasty stuff. Check out the link I have for you to give you more information about it. Be careful too. Your sister will have her child soon enough- there is no use in forcing the issue…

Ok so after reading alot of comments, ppl saying it doesn’t work don’t do it, well I did it and yes it did, very quickly and effectively… Baby was fine as well, I did ask my DR friend, he and a few others said it is perfectly safe, it’s like anything else if u ask, each medical individual will say differently, keep in mind that why they call it the practice of medicine. I personally will say go ahead and try it… Everyone body is different. I would take 2 tablespoons starting out and mix it with drink to chug and then chase it more lol cuz its nasty, then take warm shower to relax muscles, then do some walking. To get things moving. It can take anywhere from 1 hr to 8 hrs to work, don’t go too far from bathroom, things could get messy
