Orgasm if having premature labor symptoms?

25 January 2010 8 Responses

A Parent asks, I am 29 weeks pregnant and on medication for premature labor symptoms (contractions). My doctor told me to stay away from intercourse because it will possibly irritate my cervix again and cause more contractions.

My question is: Can I have orgasms still? In other words, can my husband and I have “external sex” and still be ok?

Please no harsh words – I understand that regardless of my want to be close to my husband, if it will put my pregnancy in a worse situation, then it’s not an option. Thank you and I appreciate any responses.

Yes orgasm stimulates (or can) contractions. That is why they say that if you have sex and an orgasm that it will help bring on labor.

Even manipulating the breasts can cause contractions. Orgasms make your uterus contract…

I am 29 weeks as well. Earlier in my pregnancy I was put on restricted activity (which included intercourse) due to some bleeding. At the time my husband and I wondered the same thing. We never asked because I stopped bleeding fairly quickly and was back to normal but I hope that you get your answer.

Well to put it nicely… NO such luck!
I have had two preemies, I was told NO sex from 26 weeks on to 35 weeks. My hubby was trying to persuade me to have some sort of sex with him for the first two weeks, so I made him go to the Dr. He ask him if we could have ANY kind of sex, or sexual things. He said NO not until 35 weeks. then we can have all the sex we want. Orgasm will trigger contractions which will make baby come way to early! So get real good at pleasuring him for the next ten or so weeks! Hope for good sex dreams, those you cant control! Haha! Sorry, I feel your pain!

If your doctor said no sexual intercourse that means do not have oral sex, anal, “external sex”, nothing at all. The reason they don’t want you having sex is because if you already having contractions the orgasm can cause you to go into full blown labor. You do not want to have the baby this early so follow the doctor’s orders! Good luck!

Just an orgasm can bring on contractions which can soften the cervix….even if they are false contractions.

I would wait until your doctor gives you the go ahead. I also understand wanting to be close to your husband….that is natural. But this is a great time to do other things that don’t involve you having an orgasm. I just wouldn’t risk it.

NO! This the reason intercourse is so bad. Sorry, but everytime a woman orgasms-pregnant or not- her uterus contracts. Orgasms are a no no.
Just wait until the baby is born and have all the orgasms you want hun. Sorry.

You should stay away from it. Orgasms cause contraction of the abdominal muscles and can cause you to go back into pre-term labor. Wait until you are 36 weeks to resume any type of sexual relationship (which I know is hard). Even nipple stimulation could result in you going into labor – it releases oxytocin which is the human equivalent of pitocin – the stuff they use to induce labor.
