Very tiny baby..but doctor says it’s not premature..?

A Parent asks, My baby is 4 weeks old and she’s extremely tiny for her age. The doctors says she’s not premature and she’s healthy. She’s 5 pounds and 4 ounces. I’ve been buying her premmies (that’s what they call the premature clothing) recently becuase the regular newborn clothes are very large on her. Some fit but are very loose. I just want to make sure that Stella’s healthy and growing normally.
Also, do you think she’s under the premature even if the doctor says no?
I’m sorry if I sound overwhelmed or not understanding, but I’m just wondering and want Stella to be fine.

well as long as she is eating good and gaining weight and sleeping good then she is ok
Premature only applies babies born before 37 weeks. Unless you gave birth before 37 weeks, she is not premature. Her doctor would let you know if he was concerned about her growth, especially at such a young age. My daughter is classified as premature, even though she was born weighing 6lbs 6oz at 35 weeks.
what was her birth weight? is she gaining weight. she does sound small for her age.
If your daughter was full term, then no she is not considered a preemie.
The AVERAGE weight of a NB is 7 1/2lbs, which means that some babies are smaller and some are bigger.
If the doctor isn’t concerned and she’s thriving (gaining weight, by 4 weeks she should be able to have a bit of quiet alert time, etc) then I wouldn’t worry either.
Some babies are just small, while others are big. Don’t hold your breath though, they grow FAST!
My baby was born at 5 lbs 15 oz and dropped down to like 5 lbs 7 oz. I was trying to breastfeed, and he wasn’t getting any milk so he dropped quick!
But, anyway, they thought that he was early because he was so small. He was actually one day late. They even gave me a cocaine test because they thought he was a crack head baby, because he was so small. I could have told them I never touched a drug in my life.
So, I understand what you are going through. The preemie stuff does fit, but she is not a preemie. The newborn stuff was baggy on him, but wasn’t too baggy to be uncomfortable. He was in newborn till about 2 months.
Now, 6 months later, he is a whopping 17 lbs
