Should BHP’s decision to introduce 18 weeks parental leave worldwide be embraced by the Australian government?

7 January 2010 2 Responses

A Parent asks, BHP Billiton – the big Australian mining company has introduced parental leave on full pay of 18 weeks. This is in keeping with its first step towards supporting the World Health Organisation policy that parents should get parental leave of 24 weeks or six months when they give birth to or adopt a child.

Australians and the ACTU in particular have been trying to get the government to make paid maternity leave compulsory for all companies and businesses.

What do you think?

ABSOLUTELY!!! It is disgraceful that a country as wealthy as Australia does not have any provisions for paid parental leave. I was so happy to hear of BHP’s decision (and great timing too right before the budget is announced) as it shows that even industries being affected greatly by the economic crisis can support working mothers.

It’s a much better provision of resources than the baby bonus.

I don’t agree with it at all. What about all the small businesses that can’t afford to pay this and end up going under. I think it is absolutely ridiculous. We already get enough money from the government with Family tax benefits etc. People are just greedy now.
I had all my kids (8) without paid maternity leave. When you decide to have kids then that is your choice but don’t expect the government to pay for your wages as well.
